Does someone have to die before we stop rush-hour traffic in Prospect Park — Brooklynian

Does someone have to die before we stop rush-hour traffic in Prospect Park

  • agreed!  Everytime I see a car in the park I think of the designers.  Olmsted barely wanted boats in his plans for the Chicago World's Fair because they weren't tranquil enough -- imagine cars!
  • It's a great cause and one that various advocacy groups have been pushing for.
  • once upon a time traffic flowed through Washington Square park, and neighborhood activists were able to change that. i think it could happen here! i can put up with those jerks in spandex on their $8k carbon bikes, but cars are a far greater menace
  • I saw a guy in a DOT vest today going around and taking pictures of traffic lights on the East side of the park. Dare I hope they are getting ready to actually make the park safer?

    Dear (whynot_31),

Have you heard the big news? Major sections of Central Park and Prospect Park are going car-free!

Today, after 36 years of T.A. advocacy, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the majority of each park’s roadways will be dedicated solely to recreation for the first time in more than a century.

It’s a monumental victory that happened because you never stopped fighting for a simple truth: cars don’t belong in parks.

This historic moment is a direct product of your activism and your financial support of Transportation Alternatives. Thank you for being a T.A. member.

After work today, come share hugs, high fives and memories of a remarkable 36-year activist campaign. We’ll be gathering in Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Park and Bethesda Terrace in Central Park at 7 pm tonight.

    See you in the parks!
