Saturday, May 16 is the annual Brooklyn Half Marathon

Expect lots of sweaty, near naked people along Eastern Parkway and beyond.

"More than 25,000 runners take to the streets of Brooklyn and cross the
finish line each year at the annual running of this borough’s
installment of the Five-Borough Half Marathon Series, organized by the
New York Road Runners club — which also organizes the famed New York
City Marathon each fall, and the New York City Half Marathon in the
spring."

  • I'll be there! Very sweaty but not very naked
  • I ran this race once, >30 years ago. I thought I would die :-)
  • Rain and thunderstorms are predicted for Saturday, so this event is certainly not for the faint of heart.
  • Oooo and i wonder what it means for bus and subway service

Actually as long as the rain isn't too heavy running in the rain can be incredibly refreshing. I suspect they might delay the start of the rain, for liability reasons, if there is lighting.
  • They have the power to delay rain?
  • Typo I meant marathon.
  • I suspected that. But I think delaying the rain until Sunday might also help.
  • Oooo and i wonder what it means for bus and subway service
i don't think it means anything for subway service...but buses, i'm not sure.

either way it's all gonna be over by noon! most saturdays i haven't left the house before noon.

The line of porta potties asssembled along Eastern Parkway is impressive.

If the organizers have not hauled them away by the afternoon, a few of them might be used by the people participating in the Crown Heights Immersion scheduled for tomorrow: http://brooklynbased.com/blog/2015/04/20/total-crown-heights-immersion-may-16/

  • O_O that IS impressive.

i've never done a race before that had more than a few hundred people. this race has 40,000 registrants
  • But it will have at most 39,999 runners, since my knee decided not to cooperate last weekend.
  • Oooo and i wonder what it means for bus and subway service
Today I saw signs at the bus shelters on the B41 at Empire and for the B43 at Empire at Washington. Buses will be rerouted.
  • The Brooklyn Half did a horrible job of cleaning the loop. There are empty gel packages and tabs everywhere. You can tell where the water stations ate because the cups have been squashed into the ground. Truly disgusting!
  • man! that really sucks. i vaguely wondered about that while i was running the course--by the time i reached ocean parkway, the cups were a mashed into a pulp on the road. i made an effort to toss all my water cups into the huge trash cans at the water stations, and i saw a lot of fluid station volunteers later in the course cleaning up with big brooms. the rain definitely did not make things easy :\

  • Yeah it appears the volunteers more or less gave up on fighting with the rain. As of this morning all of the trash is still in place.
  • Yup, went for a jog earlier and it was a mess, those plastic gel pouch-thingies being the worst. I don't see those biodegrading anytime soon.
