Corner of Empire Boulevard and Bedford Avenue

The strip is complete-as long as the tenants were to remain there for a while. There was one variety store (that occupied the last space on that strip) who was there very briefly.
-
What's the store on the far right? Looking forward to wandering down there for Slurpees once the weather warms up.

This former gas station, along with the one at EP and Bedford, have the same owner; Cumberland Farms.cameralady wrote: I noticed this week that the gas station (the one next to the Burger King) is now closed and boarded up. I wonder what will come there next.
Yup.

Plywood is going up today.

They operate convenience stores. Which leads me to two possibilities:
1. We are going to get a convenience store, with or without gasoline. If it has gas, it will get new tanks.
2. They have removed the gas tanks because they plan to sell the site. It is unknown what we will get. -

For now some sort of music and dance academy. -
We are getting another storage facility: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/44318/empire-and-bedford-will-be-#Item_2

There are two small trees that were planted relatively recently alongside the curb on Empire Boulevard. Look at what's there by one of the tree pits:

Gross.

Is it even legal?

Front of 7/11? Sadly this is probably not the first or last time you'll come across this. The curbside policy here along the Boulevard seems to be quite a problem, only contributing to more unsightly stains and worse, tumble-garbage that is inevitably strewn all over. Why no container policy? Is it too much of a hassle? Everywhere else I've lived required trash to be at least in a barrel. Hell, we had to PAY for special bags to be picked up by muni trash where I'm from!
Best advice would be to call 311 or do a report online. Keep at it and you'll see change, just may be a bit. -
@rararuu - Actually 7-Eleven has its own dumpsters on the Bedford Avenue side. I suspect this trash was from one of the other occupants of this little strip mall. (Pizza Hut? The locksmith? It's hard to tell.)Speaking of 311, the sidewalk on the Bedford Avenue side was jacked up for a while. I reported it a while back and I think it has since been paved.
Everywhere else I've lived required trash to be at least in a barrel. - See more at: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/comment/561827#Comment_561827
;Does a business have to put out its commercial trash in a barrel or dumpster?
-
No. They just have to hire a private hauler, and can only have it out a certain number of hours before it is picked up.
-
Actually, that picture looks like they have pretty much complied with the law. Trash has to be bagged. If it's recycling it has to be in a clear or blue bag, and all other trash can be in any bag. Paper recycling has to be put together in a container and secured, but doesn't need to be wrapped or tied in any way. Trash goes out after 5-6pm for pickup the next day and must be curbside. For commercial businesses, the rules are essentially the same, unless the business rents a dumpster or other container from their hauler..Its possible that the commercial hauler didn't come through that evening, or that this is residential trash that didn't get picked up in a timely manner, and when that doesn't happen you get people walking by and putting trash on top of the bagged trash hence the tumbleweed trash. But overall, given the number of people that are in this city, I think that trash pickup is pretty efficient. As for the why no cans, its because requiring cans to be put out would take up valuable sidewalk space and actually make trash removal more difficult. On a residential street with all single family homes you'd have 50-100 cans on each block. Since pickups don't necessarily occur overnight, cans would sit outside on the sidewalks while those people were at work, blocking sidewalks and access to the street. Cans used to be required, but the sanitation department decided over twenty years ago that this actually made more work for their employees and slowed down trash collection, and with plastic bags becoming ubiquitous, they opted for the bags only requirement.
-
There shouldn't be residential trash there anyway. The apartment buildings next to Western Beef and the buildings next to 7-Eleven (on Bedford) have their own cans.My beef is that the trash was left right on the tree.
-
It looks like bad urban planning. From the wider picture above, it looks like the only sidewalk space that isn't driveway is in front of the Metro PCS and the Pizza Hut. Half of that is the tree pit.So if this is the Metro PCS trash, they may not have any curbside space to leave their trash other than the tree pit. Commercial business are often very sensitive about letting others put their trash in front of their buildings because sanitation tickets the business that trash is in front of in case of a violation. Its also an issue because some commercial haulers charge by the amount of trash they remove, so co-mingling might actually result in a cost.

Not surprised. I don't the space in that entire lot is utilized very well.ETA: This is another view of the trash awaiting pick up.
