car2go is now in all of CH and PLG (until Nostrand)

Recently, it seems like their cars are everywhere.  They came to my neck of the woods, southeast CH, April 30th.  Anyone have any reviews they can share?

Also, if there are any car2go staff members out there, I would greatly appreciate a promo code to waive the one time registration fee of $35.00. :)

These are the tiny little cars that you pick up and drop off on the street.

Ms. Whynot looked into them to see if they would be a viable option to traditional car rentals for DC, Philly, and Catskill voyages.

So far, we have concluded that we can get a slightly larger car for about same cost, from Enterprise and the like.

However, the ability to just park it on the street when we are done, rather than conform to their drop off times and locations is very attractive.
  • The ability to pay by the minute is very attractive.  I wouldn't consider this for anything but local or to substitute traditional rentals.

We don't really do short car trips. So, Zipcar hasn't been a real option because it is really expensive to have one parked "in your possession" overnight.

At $85 per day, Cars2Go is much cheaper than a Zipcar would be.

  • We've used this for short trips: The other day we drove it to Home Depot, ended the trip, and was able to get back in 30 minutes later, so we basically only paid for the time we were actually in the car!
  • I use them all the time. They're great.

@whynot_31 is the $85/day still subject to the 150 free miles ($0.45 for each additional mile over http://www.moneycrashers.com/car2go-review/) rule or do you get unlimited mileage for the entire duration (I'd find that hard to believe, but would love to be wrong)? If you only get 150 free miles per rental, then the value of Car2Go goes down by a lot to the point where doing a daily rental from Enterprise (I booked a 24 hr rental from Enterprise at LGA last month for $60, which included collision), etc., would be much less expensive for me. At that point, depending on the distance, the mileage fees would be more than you'd spend on on fuel in a rental vehicle. Not to mention that you don't have much space with Car2Go. Car2Go is certainly convenient, and I'd guess I'd pay for that convenience occasionally, but only if I could get my sign-up fee waived and if I was using locally for less than an hour or so.
  • That is why I have -thus far- stayed with companies like Enterprise and All Car.
  • I look at it like a do it yourself cab. Definitely a nice option to say, get over to the other side of Prospect Park, or other areas that take too long to get to via public transportation. We actually managed to fit four people into one (I wouldn't recommend trying to do this), but really it's a two person capacity vehicle. I signed up when they first came to Brooklyn, so all the fees were waived, which was nice. It's good to at least have the option to go hop in a (diminutive) car if I feel like it. I actually miss driving sometimes, though I have a half hour of free minutes that expire today that I haven't used, so it evidently isn't a service I'm likely to use all that frequently.
