New Tree Guard Rails on Nostrand — Brooklynian

New Tree Guard Rails on Nostrand

Saw these pretties being put in today, along Nostrand between Sterling and St.johs. Apparently funded by Council Member Laurie Cumbo!

  • How does one go about getting these put in on a street? Or what's the process for selecting streets where they are put in? Anyone know?
  • I'll email Laurie's office to find out. So nice!

Many block associations in better neighborhoods fund these things on their own for residential blocks.

I am going to assume that you are talking about a commercial strip. So, call the Chief of Staff for your local politician, and/or the District Manager of your local Community Board.

....or, if you want to increase the chances of it happening, have the Merchants Association call. This may mean a Merchants Association needs to be created...
  • We had these put in on our block on president street. We didn't fund it. I believe it was requested by our block association to a the parks dept.
  • More of this on the avenue Improves business.
  • We got them for almost all trees on my block of Midwood Street in PLG about two years ago. I think they were funded by the Borough President's office. Our block Association put in the request. A request the previous year by the Lefferts Manor Assoc. had been less successful for my block, resulting in just a few tree guards, although there were quite a few installed on other LM blocks.
  • Tree rails lend an air of sophistication to the often overlooked little stops like Sha Sha Cultural Boutique at 709 Nostrand ave that sells more than incense.

Merchants Associations are often key to addressing such issues.

The CB8 side of Nostrand Ave (north of EP) has made a few attempts at organizing a Merchants Assn, but seems to be having an uphill struggle.

Meanwhile, the CB9 side has one that is reasonably active.

Did Nostrand south of EP get the tree guards as well?

I suspect Ms. Cumbo was able to secure funding for these tree pits based on her district, as opposed to CB8 vs CB9.
