The scanner sites don't seem to report it, which (hopefully) means no one was hit by the gunfire.

Are you sure they weren't fireworks? There was loud bangs going off on Lincoln Pl from about 9pm. Way too many to be gunfire I think

Positive. It was several rounds of automatic weapon fire at approx 2:02am. Then there was one pistol shot at approx 2:05am. Regrettably I had the huge misfortune of growing up with an automatic-weapons enthusiast, so I know this horrible sound all too well...That's what made me jump out of bed...I couldnt believe what I was hearing. It was not fireworks. Believe me, I wish it had been.
-
Did you let 911 know?
-
Yes.
-
I hope the NYPD can get this under control soon; if not, changing demographics will. It wasn't all too many years ago when Brooklynian had more stories/threads of gun violence taking place in eastern Prospect Heights (just search "shots" in the search box and you'll see some examples). But, we don't really see those threads anymore (or certainly at a vastly reduced rate) now that the neighborhood transformation (i.e. poorer residents who may be more susceptible to illegal gun culture being replaced by wealthier residents who are not) is nearly complete. NW Crown Heights (regardless of where one puts the border) is getting there, but isn't completely there yet. I don't fully embrace everything that comes with the gentrification of the area, but readily welcome increased safety.

Curious, why is it a horrible misfortune growing up with an automatic weapons enthusiast?

*Insert assault/(semi)-automatic weapons debate here*

@eastbloc
It may have been the specific automatic weapons enthusiast she grew up with that made her experience horrible misfortune.
BTW, if we can get this thread to discuss assault weapons, horrible misfortune and safety stemming from gentrification ...that would be epic.

Technically, most pistols that aren't revolvers are automatic weapons, so I'm curious whether the OP believes she heard a burst of fully automatic fire (as from a selective fire weapon, such as an AK-47 or an M-16) or just a series of shots from a repeating firearm. The former certainly does have a very specific report, and it would be an entirely new experience for me in the neighborhood. Most of our gunplay seems to be from pistols, which have the benefit of being easily concealed but generally do not feature select-fire modes.

In general, pistols are also far cheaper to obtain.
Those AR15s and AK47s seem to run one at least $800 new:

Whereas new pistols can be had for generally less than that:

While the used, illegal firearm market is different, I would expect the price differentials to still be present.
....especially given the quality of weaponry usually confiscated by local police: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/46029/august-10th-in-the-last-three-days-the-77th-pct-has-removed-3-handguns-from-crown-heights/p1

Most guns, pistol or rifles, are semi-automatic, not automatic. The difference is semi you have to pull the trigger to fire each shot whereas automatic one pull empties the clip.
-
It's ambiguous. "Automatic" can mean "firing continuously when the trigger is squeezed", or it can mean "automatically chambering the next round after the previous round is fired", as opposed to bolt-action or revolver-type mechanisms. Hence I asked the question of what was meant by the OP.And one pull doesn't "empty the clip", that would be a pretty useless weapon. Fully automatic pistols and rifles continue to fire as long as the trigger remains depressed. I'm sure that is what you meant anyway, but there is too much misinformation about firearms out there already for me to like things to be as clear as possible.
