    "FLATBUSH, N.Y. (WABC) --

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's first deputy counsel was shot Monday morning in
the pre-festival violence that happened in Brooklyn Monday morning.

Carey Gabay, 43, was shot in the head on Bedford Avenue near the intersection
of Montgomery Street in Flatbush at about 3:45 a.m.

Officials said Gabay was with his brother and they walked past an argument where
shots were fired, and he was struck by at least one bullet.

Gabay was rushed the hospital where he's in critical condition."

  • Wow. Sad how many shootings there have been this summer and so close to home. I haven't read much about the shooters actually being caught either.

Yes, this shooting is right near me. I'm out of town at the moment so I missed the madness.

P.S. That's Sullivan Place, not Sullivan Street. Sullivan Street is in Red Hook.
  • Deepest prayers and thoughts are with Mr. Gabay. This shooting madness needs to stop. It's just awful. I'd love to know what the mayor & NYPD are going to do to deal with the insanity.
  • How many murders need to happen before the parade is re-examined?
  • “Based on the structure of the crime scene and interviews of some
witnesses, it appears that possibly three separate guns may have been
used,” Davis said. “In an instance like this, when you possibly have
three separate illegal guns in one shooting, that’s another sign of how
much of a problem illegal guns are in New York.”

"Cops found a MAC-10 machine pistol they believe was fired into the crowd
but are doing more testing. They also found nearly 30 shell casings in
two areas, bolstering the belief Gabay was caught in a gunfight between
    two rivals."

What do you suggest? Should the entire neighborhood be on lock down? Should the NYPD use metal detectors to check every single person who passes through? Is that even feasible?

By the way, what happens to the NYPD presence once the parade festivities are over? Shouldn't we feel safe all the time?

It's a shame that something like this happened to Mr. Garay, who was truly an innocent bystander, minding his own business.

Lots people come out for Jouvert, and were likely walking in the immediate area. Despite this, I have not come across any additional reports of anyone else being hit.

If nearly 30 shots were fired, it amazes me that only one person was hit.

Gothamist reports that according to the Wall Street Journal "[Mr. Gabay] has 'no brain activity'".  (I was afraid of that.) How sad.
  • How many murders need to happen before the parade is re-examined?
Not sure what more can be done as long as the parade exists. The shootings are sad, but more sadly shootings in this city and country happen regularly with or without parade gatherings.

I'm glad that Cuomo and others haven't used this incident to suggest the parade should be moved or canceled.
  • I'm far from an expert, but the story in the Times made it at least sound like new ideas like a Safe Zone (a la NYE in Times Square) will be explored.

In Times Square, that zone works at New Years because there is a focal point and time (...ball drops and midnight).

I don't know how such a plan would work re: Jouvert, because it presently has no focal point or time.

I suppose they could create a focal point and time (ie a stage with acts) and then establish a perimeter. They could then either keep people within in the perimeter (people must wait for hours within the perimiter at Times Sq before seeing the ball drop), or attempt to allow limited movement.

  • What is a Safe Zone and how would it work here?
  • Okay. What about residents who want or need to cross the parade route/"frozen zone"?

On New Year's Eve in Times Square, the term "frozen zone" has at least two meanings:

    1. No one can move.
    2. It is really cold.

If such a zone is created for Jouvert, we may want to call it something else.

    The Hot Zone?
    1. No one can move.
    2. 98 degrees.

BTW, the NYPD is distributing this sketch of the suspect:

  • Times Square has mostly stores and office buildings, but same set up probably wouldn't work in a highly residential area.

Perhaps the NYPD focuses much of its personnel and efforts on the actual parade time and area, and not enough on the aftermath and side streets. That seems to be where most of the fights happen after people have been drinking all day and break out into their smaller gatherings and parties.

The police (and the city itself) seem to get a passing grade when it can declare that little violence took place during the parade.

....said passing grade is absolutely essential to those who believe the parade represents a culture of people.

Hence, it seems that the police and parade organizers want as little association as possible with the events that happen before, after, or around the actual parade.

To me, the whole idea of hosting something that:
    - is massive
    - has ill defined time and geographic boundaries, and
    - few barriers to entry,

seems like it presents too ripe of an opportunity for opponents define "one's culture".

I prefer that I am the one who defines my culture, and I suspect that the vast majority of the people who attend carnival wish they had that ability as well.

I do not envy their position, or that of the police or politicians.

  • Jesse Hamilton has an office one block from the scene of the crime at Montgomery and Bedford.
  • It would not surprise me if local media was present at the vigil.   It follows up on a story that the vast majority of viewers are already familiar with.

It can be coupled with an update re: Mr. Gabay's health, which is sounding quite dire.

Although a few people were killed Labor Day weekend, the death of this innocent, accomplished person is getting the most attention.    Lots of local politicians are leading a Prayer Walk on September 17.

The walk concludes where he was killed.

  • It seems two suspects are now being sought.    The guy in the sketch above, plus another guy.

Here is a video of them running into a nearby apartment building

Meanwhile, the walk on Thursday is getting pretty large. My gut is telling me about 500 will show up.image
