Petition for gated Dog Park / R.I.P. Gigio / Mount Prospect Park

Hi, i'm new to posting on these forums. I had a 2 year old Welsh Terrier named Gigio. We played most mornings at Mount Prospect Park, which is a great run for dogs needing good exercise. The reality is that there isn't a single gated dog run within a good mile of my house. This monday my dog caught a squirrel, the ultimate prize and proceeded to head out of the park with it. Nothing i could do would stop him, he's never done that, but then he had never caught a squirrel ! He was hit by a car on Eastern Parkway and died in my arms a few minutes later. Words really can't express, they can't. And i've experienced a lot of human deaths, this is unique.

I'm beyond devastated. He was my baby, and maybe some of you who bring your dogs to the park recognize him.

I have seen some postings about getting a gated dog run for people bordering Prospect Park / Eastern Parkway. And my first few visits to Mount Prospect Park i was told the horror tales of a spooked dog running out onto eastern parkway. I thought, "wow, that is my worst nightmare."

If you feel inclined and want to help me petition for a gated dog run, i just don't even know where to start.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss! That is heartbreaking - words are inadequate. He was adorable.

I've also long thought that there is a real need for a gated dog park in the neighborhood, but no idea how to go about it.

There's been other threads on here along those lines, but they always devolve into arguments because ppl think an enclosed dog run is a threat to the off leash hours in prospect park. I don't get it personally. I dont have any reason to want to interfere with those hours, but I don't use them exactly because I am too afraid my pup might get spooked or chased by another dog out of the park and he would get hit by a car.

Im so sorry to hear about your baby. if my dog caught a critter I could see him doing the same thing as yours did. I'd sign any petition you started to get an enclosed dog park.

I feel horrible for your loss... words can't express. His picture is adorable.

I kinda know how you feel - I just lost a cat at the end of August to kidney disease - and it's definitely a loss of a family member.

I am going to double back on the message board for the re-design of Elijah Stroud, which should have been an opportunity i wish i had taken looking back. It doesn't seem to be that there was any mention of a dog run being included.

But there is plenty of room on Mount Prospect Park grounds perhaps. I'll come back when i have some more insight about what i can do.

I just felt an immediate need to post, really without knowing where to begin. I'll probably head back to the park at some point to talk to the other dog owners as well.

You may also want to look at Lowry Triangle (located at Underhil/pacific/washington/atlantic) .

Relative to Mount Prospect Park, it may have far fewer people who are emotionally tied to its present configuation.
