  • Unless they are able to get the SLA to not listen to the CB, enjoying profits between 1AM and 2AM is likely to get their licensed suspended.
  • Careful not to confuse Whynot's assessment of what he observed at the meeting with his own opinion. I haven't felt he has slandered anyone on this thread. Even though I wish he acknowledged that the CB really didn't want Catfish there in the first place, making them agree to stricter closing hours then necessary -Which is a tactic the board had used successfully a few months prior to scare a bar from opening on Washington.
  • I feel the article I quoted above in Oct 2012 makes it clear that the CB opposed Catfish when it first opened:

    http://www.bkbureau.org/bar-push-meets-resistance-crown-heights

Needless to say, the SLA issued a lic despite the CB's wishes.

Each entity (the CB as well as Catfish) is learning that they have power, but said power has limits.

....and there are effective ways to maximize it.

  • Are they truly that loud and crazy or are the neighbors just uptight and not happy about "newcomers" (i.e. white kids)?
The latter is absolutely the case here. The place is not loud or crazy and is run by professional, smart people, whynot's slandering of them as ignorant about their environment notwithstanding.

I have seen two local business owners show up here to condemn his posts about their businesses. There may have been more I have missed. The Catfish guys would definitely be justified in doing the same.
But aren't you doing the same with respect to the neighbors who have concerns about the noise? The commentary as it's been relayed here was around noise, people smoking outside and the business staying open later than their license allows. You're accusing these people of being anti-white without any basis or justification for your position. At the same time, you seem unwilling to even contemplate that these people may have legitimate concerns. I can imagine that it would be difficult in the summer time to have people standing outside or underneath your windows smoking, where the smell of smoke may come into nearby apartments through windows or air conditioner vents. I know from my own experiences that people often don't anticipate how sound travels and that a phone conversation outside can indeed often be heard loud and clear by those that are indoors. And even if the place is supposed to close at 1am, just meerly the process of locking up and pulling down roll-down gates can sound incredibly loud on an otherwise quiet block and could conceivably awaken a baby or small child sleeping near a window.

If the owners of Catfish are as smart and professional as you say, I'd hope that they'd see these concerns as issues which can and should be addressed. While there may not be perfect solutions to them, the neighbors might appreciate the fact that they are attempting to address them instead of dismissing them outright.

Tonight, the owners of Catfish will attempt to get the support of CB8's subcommittee for longer hours. They want to stay open until 2 AM, 7 days a week.

They also want to open their front windows, and have music acts on occasion.

If CB8 grants this support, it will be over the objection of residents who live nearby.

Those in favor of the expansion of hours argue that the operators have shown that they have spent lots of $ on noise reduction.

However, the neighbors are still unhappy with the smokers and noise the establishment creates.

One should note that these are the same neighbors who opposed Catfish OPENING, so it isn't clear to me they would ever be happy with Catfish's existence.

    Hence, the intractable differences.

    Play by play boring details:
The establishment is on the wait list for a street bike corral.

The establishment agreed to continue to meet with area residents, and not to open the windows when the music was being played.

The "change of operation" would last until their renewal, which is about a year from now.

The not so climatic climax: The subcommittee supported the change of operation: Catfish will get extended hours and music.

FYI: neighbors never opposed Catfish OPENING. Opposed the late night closing hours and were concerned about having a rowdy bar so close-by.
Now, the neighbors will have to live with smokers and loud mouths under their windows from 11am to 2am, plus the usual after hours hanging out.

When I start going out in Brooklyn bars, 10 years ago, if I was loud outside someone from the staff will address me firmly: quiet or get out of here.
Now it seems it's the other way, neighbors shut up or move. With the blessings of Community Boards.

I wish that Catfish owners and staff will be more old school about this, otherwise neighbors will suffer and complaints will follow. Not to mention that they might feel betrayed by CB8.

    Cheers!
  • It think it is weird to feel betrayed by an entity with so little power, but if doing so helps them, I wish them the best.

They are.  These are NIMBY extremists who do not want any bars or restaurants on Bedford.
