Looking to start a bar — Brooklynian

Looking to start a bar

Hi Brooklynites -

This is just something that has been on my mind for while - I'm looking to start a bar in the neighborhood around prospect heights and crown heights. I am not in the entertainment industry (actually in construction and design), and I just wanted to get my feet wet and gather some ideas.

Is there anyone that has started or gone through such a process of opening up a store/bar? I'm looking for a raw space with a basement for a small dance floor.

How do I get investors? Which realty company has a good listing of retail spaces for lease? How is the permitting process - especially for a liqour license?

Thanks!

  • If you're going to have a dance floor you need a cabaret license as well and that sets up a whole other set of issues, especially if you're going to have it in the basement. You'll need two means of egress, probably a sprinkler system and it's probably not worth the extra effort.
