4th Ave

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Hi Everyone,

Just curious as to what type of business folks would like to see on 4th ave. besides major franchises. I believe 5th ave and 7th ave has enough food and drink establishments what do you feel is missing in our neighborhood?

  • 4ave is in gowanus canal.
  • I don't consider 4th ave very much part of Park Slope. I only venture down there to take the R/M. I would rather see the south end of 5th avenue clean up a bit-- too many dollar stores and check cashing places.

I love the dollar stores! Too many of them have been pushed out already.
  • Takeout--it'd be nice to have takeout places on the way home from the train.

I used to love dollar stores but then I realized that nothing I buy there ever lasts beyond one use so it's not actually cost effective.

The only exception to this rule is cheap wine glasses, which my girlfriend seems to break at a rate of 1 per evening. So the cheaper the better. I'm close to making her drink wine out of a sippy cup.
  • I bought lots of things that lasted - strainers for my bathroom sink, bottle openers, those long stick lighter things for lighting botanica candles....
  • I agree, I have found the $ stores to be helpful, especially when I moved in and needed cheap odds and ends like cleaning supplies, extension cords, light bulbs, etc... but there are just SO many, I would like some variation on the south side of 5th.

There's a ton of those dollar stores on 5th ave past 9th street...

Not everyone can afford to shop at the high price boutiques on North 5th Ave. Also, 4th Avenue is quickly becoming an extension of Park Slope. You don't have to like it, but it is happening.

hey dont knock on sippy cups till you try em. god i wish they made adult sippy cups. i love those things.
  • on 4th avenue we could use a book store{not the jim mcgreevy kind. no way :(} with comfy couches.
—sans bedbugs and ballyhoo of course

and a strip club too. that'd be nice...........

Ummm....there's some prositutes that use the bathrooms at the Dunkin Donuts/Taco Bell on 3rd Av. I'm sure they could be persuaded to do a private show in the parking lot for little more than the price of a crunchwrap supreme.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few more food and drink establishments on 4th as well. Spread it around. I think you need some of that, along with other stuff, if you want to establish foot traffic on that strip in general. I'd buy a coffee on the way to the subway if anyone were selling one.

There are no good ice cream shops in Park Slope. No Korean food. I would support good barbecue, and maybe on 4th Ave somebody could get the space to open a good barbecue joint. And a Gap -- I'll say it -- or something like it in an independent store, i.e., not an overpriced boutique but a good source for basics. A decent electronics store; Park Slope is hostage to Radio Shack, the worst retail chain in the world. A housewares store--Tarzian badly needs competition. Agree about a book store. Or how about a newsstand, a really good one, with a wide selection of magazines.

Depending on the section of 4th Ave, it could support a good wine store. There's nothing worthwhile on 5th Ave south of Red White and Bubbly, and south of there the only worthwhile wine shops are south on 7th Ave. Might as well be on another planet. How about a second branch of Bierkraft? 9th street or so would be far enough not to cannibalize the original, I think.
  • I would hope that the big, new apt bldgs going onto 4th Ave would have space for ground floor retail. Regardless of what you think of Park Slope today, 4th Ave is about to change enormously.
  • On the corner of 4th and Carroll (next to that Cattyshack bar) they are putting in a 24 hour diner!

    Yahoo!

I think they said it will be open in Jan/Feb 2007.

    oh sadness.
i see my dry effervescent wit has no home here...
    le sigh.....

  • Wasn't there a Whole Foods supposed to be going up on 4th? Any word on that?
  • The whole Foods is going up on 3rd Ave. although there has been a delay as the soil is still toxic and further tests and clean up are required.

Have you been to Eagle Provisions? They have a respectable selection

(I was laughing on the inside, I swear).

Last I checked, the scheduled date to open is 2008.

However, I've come to love Steve's C-Town, so I may not even care if they don't open.

I think I saw, this weekend, that the one going up behind the park with the Old Stone House does have a banner up saying "prime retail space available". Of course, I may have been hallucinating.

And there are three great places to get food on 4th ave btw 9th and 15th. Kudos if you can figure it out, or  if you know already.
  • A 24hr Drug store would be perfect for 4th Ave. somewhere between Union and 9th St - Imagine that a part of the city that actually needs a drugstore.

There is always Nerguards (sp?) on 5th and 9th Street, they are open 24 hours
  • you know what would be most amazing?
    what? you say.
    an ethiopian joint!!!!!!!!!

just like ghenet. but in crooklyn.
    yo.

Yeah but if you are in the Union, President, Carroll vicinity - 9th St is a hike to pick up a perscription (especially if you are sick); besides drug stores also have cards, baterries, and tons of other stuff that you need day to day that arent carried by many of the 'specialty retailers' along 5th or if they are, they have hours that arent great for us commuters
