11 Easy Steps to Brooklynian Happiness — Brooklynian

11 Easy Steps to Brooklynian Happiness

pitu
edited November -1 in Site Issues
yeah baby, I'm talking about The Rules . . .

1. Be nice. If you can't be nice, go to a different website.

2. "Nice" does not mean kittens and rainbows. More like, "general level of civil decorum." It's OK to argue and disagree, and in fact we encourage it, but don't stoop to personal attacks, name calling, shouting "YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF GENTRIFYING YUPPIES", or other childish behavior.

3. Try to pick one username and stick with it. If you start posting under different identities, do not be surprised when people get angry with you, or try to "out" you publicly as masquerading.

4."Moderators" are the people who make sure these boards stay fun and useful. They have their own set of rules too (see READ THE RULES at the top of the board.)

5. A moderator can delete your post for any reason, for any cause. [See my note below. DH]

6. If your post gets deleted, it's not a First Amendment issue. It's probably an issue about you being a jerk.

7. Please try not to post in multiple boards, unless you have a really good reason.

8. We are busy people with a lot to do and read, so we discourage posts that don't add anything to the discussion (example: "LOL")

9. People won't take kindly to wild generalizations you might make about them.

10. Commercial posts go in CLASSIFIEDS. If you are posting about an event that's specific to one neighborhood, it's OK to post that outside of the CLASSIFIEDS board.

11. Please SEARCH before posting general questions.

If you feel any of these rules have been violated, it is best to PM the site administrator or a mod. There's a list of mods for each board at the top left of each board. If you post a complaint on the main boards, it might be deleted, or moved to the “Board Administration” area.

These boards are a place to find useful information and news about life in specific neighborhoods in Brooklyn. You can send private messages to other users if you register, or visit our "other" discussion boards, including The Classifieds, The Lounge (general chat), Randomstuff: New York and Beyond, and Board Administration (general discussions about how the site works or doesn’t work).

  • These are all really good reminders. As a 12th Step (I'm sorry in advance that it just works out that way), could we encourage people to be specific with the title of their post when they start a new discussion thread?

For example, a topic that reads "Why doesn't the store on Washington at St Johns sell beer?" may be far more useful to me than something like "Let's talk about something serious". I'll be able to know that I'll probably find a topic uninteresting (or unserious), before I spend (and maybe waste) any time reading through it.

In the case of this real example, however, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised that the discussion indeed was something I think is serious, why the store on Washington at St Johns doesn't sell beer; it was worth my time reading it.

(But it remains to be seen whether it was worth my time writing this...)
  • zzzzz.....does that add anything to the discussion? i'm snoozing through rules 5-13, and then again through rules 238-340. zzzzz......

is that a useful, constructive commnent, or a snide, barbed rejoinder from a possible (probable) misanthropic malcontent? i don't know. can YOU decide for me? please? cause i don't think i've got the right...faculties to accomplish that delicate and difficult editorial task.

this board is barely up and running and already the (word)(thought)(manners)(life) police are putting their big, heavy, leather boots on the ground. what a great way to ensure that this board NEVER GOES ANYWHERE. have fun on your ride to oblivian. when you get there, be sure to NOT drop us a line.

oh. i almost forgot....YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF GENTRIFYING YUPPIES.

Huh? I suspect you're a newcomer from Brownstoner. This board has actually been thriving since at least the spring of 05. The rules aren't new; they're a reminder for newcomers.
  • Every board has rules. We are courteous enough to publicize them.

We also invite our users to comment publicly on the rules. You're welcome.

We sometimes make the mistake of engaging users in unproductive discussions over whether our rules are worthwhile or not. Such as now: Do you really believe that "don't be childish" and "don't insult your neighbors" constitutes the heavy hand of the thought police?

if you have any more conerns, i encourage you to address them on the forum for board administration. thanks:

Sometimes I'm more likely to read a post if its title is confusing.

Oh no! I'm on the wrong blog! Can someone please direct me to A BUNCH OF CRACK HOES?
  • the crack hoes site is: brooklynian.com/parkslope/crackhoes/std.

but beware, the rules over there are even more oppressive than those in here. no profanity. no lewd comments. no snide remarks. no unpatriotic exclamations. no muslims. no jews. no republicans. no humor. nothing except full on, full time, 24/7 parkslope crack hoes.

by the way, recent reporting by digi-metrics, llp, suggests that most of the membership at the crack hoes site is made up of fomer park slope moms gone bad. touching, isn't it?

latest hot topic there: smoking crack n turning tricks. viable lifestyle or not? check it out
  • So, Pluvious, what exactly is your point? What do you contribute to the neighborhood, to this board? Why are you so angry?

So now we're a twelve step program?

I've got dibs on candicissima as a "higher power", then.

This is the only rule I think is unnecessary. Why would it matter if you post on multiple boards, as long as your posts are relevant to that particular board?

not unlike the title of *this* post
    :D
but you can write a headline and still be informative

I really like the (parenthetical) adds to existing titles that could mean anything . . .
    mdgately makes a good point
  • Could I add one other pet peeve? Sometimes people add comments without really reading the thread, so one person will make a point and then six entries down someone will say the exact same thing. I notice this not just here but on blogs in general. Sometimes it seems like people aren't really talking to one another but are instead jumping to put in their two cents (which, if someone's already said it, really is only worth about a half a cent at most!).

I agree completely. The intent of the rule is to discourage people from spamming every board with an irrelevant event posting, for example. However, there are clearly posts that are relevant to two or more neighborhoods. However, there's no way to "cross-post" a single post to multiple boards, so you're going to end up with multiple discussions of the same topic... Which I guess could be bad or good, depending.

A link to crack hoes? See you all later -- I'm a Brooklynian about to seize true "Brooklynian Happiness" !!!
  • Subject: You want to see ANGRY?

steve wrote: So, Pluvious, what exactly is your point? What do you contribute to the neighborhood, to this board? Why are you so angry?
You think Pluvious is angry??? When I realized I was communicating with A BUNCH OF GENTRIFYING YUPPIES instead of A BUNCH OF CRACK HOES, I smashed my laptop to smithereens.

$1200 down the drain and now my roommate is dragging me into anger management therapy.
  • Subject: Re: You want to see ANGRY?

RAW -- it's just this kind of post that sends me into blind fits of rage. so pointless, so non productive, so inane. oy, it makes me wanna cut off my own arms. while i might be contributing NOTHING (thanks for the heads up, steve), you're contributing even LESS. it's no wonder your roommate has intervened. when you're finished with the anger management, hit the meds. hard. if that fails to tame the savage beast, then move onto electroshock. (maybe con-ed can help you out by locating one of their "hot" manhole covers near your apt.) maybe then you won't be tempted to SCREW UP this lil' valhalla with your cranky, anti-social, misanthropic posts.

    Gadzooks! I've been busted!
  • So, to sum up: Don't be a n00b.
  • Pretty much. Also, I think we have to reconsider #5 about moderators being able to delete "any post for any reason." That was really intended to address problems with one particular user. It doesn't really make sense anymore.
  • dailyheights wrote: Pretty much. Also, I think we have to reconsider #5 about moderators being able to delete "any post for any reason." That was really intended to address problems with one particular user. It doesn't really make sense anymore.
i gotta concur heartily on this one
sometimes i read through old threads
and it's been edited to death
it's left a lifeless shell of its original thread goodness

being able to delete "any post for any reason."
it's something i've noticed happens with a vengeance to my posts

Agree with you on this one wholeheartedly.

it's kinda hard to link to deleted posts

it didn't bother me enough to post about it – but now that daily heights brought it up
i am posting in approval of reviewing the mod's policy of deleting posts at will

hope this post doesn't get deleted as well :P
  • I would practice scorched earth on your posts right now, but I just realized how awesome your "new" avatar is. Good show.

the ONLY threads I can remember this happening to are anonymous guest threads (the original AG, I mean, not the countless wannabes). I haven't seen any lately where this has happened. it's generally obvious, as quijibo noted, because there is fervent user anger about something that one can't actually see anymore. which is why it should be easy for someone aware of a more recent event to come up with an example.

you can link to examples of items that have been edited to death, however. I'd love to see them, especially if they DON'T involve Anonymous Guest

But it IS possible to link to threads where you know you had posts that were deleted. I'm curious to see how much this may have happened, because to my understanding deleting of posts is actually pretty rare and the mods are supposed to inform each other when they do it, and I don't recall ever hearing anyone mentioning deleting any of your posts.

I'm not seeing the gaps, as you described in your post. can you point me?

honestly, I'm not trying to be tongue-in-cheek - if there's some spontanous erasure computer-error/rogue mod, I'd love to know it. I'm pretty sure DH would, too.
