I've got these three trees in front of my house. I think that they are the property of the city since they are on the city easement, but that I am required to maintain them. This makes sense.

I want to put a birdhouse in one of the trees, is this an okay thing to do or would I be violating some obscure ordinance? I can secure it to the tree where it won't be an issue, but I don't want to get a ticket or have it torn down by the city.

If you secure it so that no torrential storm/blizzard will drop it, and you don't foresee any neighbors complaining, I'd say just do it. I would think that NYC Parks has better things to do then go searching for birdhouses to remove.

Use galvanized wire to attach it to the tree.

...it lasts much longer than rope or shoelaces.

I was thinking of anchoring it into the tree and then using wire as a failsafe in case it ever got loose. That said it will be about 15 feet up.

Maybe if I put it up at like 4am nobody will know who did it...

Call 311 and ask them if you can put a birdhouse in a city tree. I'd imagine the answer is no, at the same time, I'm not sure that anyone would take the time or effort to track you down if you did so.
