optimum voice problems?
i'm wondering if anyone around here who has optimum voice--cablevision's phone service--has had problems with the connection, specifically your voice dropping out and the other person not being able to hear you for brief periods (while everything sounds fine on your end).
i'm asking because this has been happening to us since we switched from verizon a few months ago. the cable techs have been out here more times than i care to think of and each time they check the connections and levels, they've replaced the modem twice, trimmed wires and spliced on new connectors, etc. and yet the problem remains.
the reason i'm posting here is that i'm starting to think this isn't a problem with the wiring in our house at all but something beyond that that may be affecting other people too. whatever it is, it never happened with verizon, where we will be going back soon if cablevision can't get its act together.
thanks.

Sometimes I sound like a robot, but I just hang up and dial again and it's fine.

My phone's been out all night and my cable's acting funky -- can't pull up the channel guide and sometimes the sound goes out. I'm about to call them, but just curious whether anyone else is having problems this evening.

i haven't had any issues w/ either my cable or phone. sometimes if i'm on the phone w/ someone else who has VoIP, it sounds a little odd.

Cablevision phone service is wacky sometimes. As for us, it has been good, really good. But, when we first signed up it was awful. Maybe that is just the dues (and they are pretty good compared to the big V) that we have to pay. I bet in a week or two all will be good. I can almost gurantee it!

this has been a couple of months now. but it sounds like no one else is having the same problem. -
we have optimum voice and while we didn't have your problem, we have had a lot of trouble. often the phone would just go dead -- horrible beeping if you picked it up to dial, and if someone called you, they would hear it ring and ring indefinitely, but you would hear nothing. nothing seemed to cause it. it would be fine for days, then break, then recover. plus, the only way to realize there was a problem was to happen to notice that you couldn't call out -- meanwhile, people might have been trying to reach you all day and you'd have had no way of knowing. it's sad when people have to email you to tell you that they called.
we tried all kinds of solutions -- plugging and unplugging things in all kind of orders, using different kinds of phone, playing all kinds of reindeer games with optimum and verizon, on the phone and in person. (it's particularly brilliant when the person on the phone at tech support directs you to unplug the modem, you comply, and then there's no phone anymore. makes ya feel real smart.)
the problem (i guess -- the solution anyway) was our digital answering machine, which had always worked fine with regular phone lines. when we took it out of the mix, no more problems. i don't understand that at all. i hate it when technology feels like superstition. but now we have voice mail. -

right! this isn't rocket science. we're just talking about a wire that connects a to b.
which makes me wonder: how many cablevision tech people does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
sorry--no punchline there. i can't say i'm amused. -
FYI, yesterday afternoon as I was coming home I passed a couple of Optimum service trucks on my block (Bergen between Grand and Classon), and then right after I got home my phone started ringing. It was someone from Cablevision calling me to let me know there had been a service problem on my block but they'd just finished repairs, so they were cancelling my service appointment for Thursday. So if anyone in the area was having problems, they're probably fixed now.
