Looking for recommendations to fix up backyard — Brooklynian

Looking for recommendations to fix up backyard

I'd like to fix up my Brooklyn townhouse backyard this summer. Does anyone have recommendations for honest, reliable, and well-priced people for any/all of the following (if one person/company can do all of these things, even better!)
- Repair/replace a concrete patio
- Debris removal from backyard
- Backyard landscaping (probably artificial turf and a woodchip bed, but I'd like to discuss options)

Any other advice from people who have done this kind of thing before? Do's and don't?
Thanks in advance!

  • Landscaping I'd recommend Kings County Nursery, located on New York Avenue. They've been talked about on the boards before. You can check with them to see if they would also do debris removal (it depends on whether you just have growth back there or if you are trying to get rid of old washing machines and garbage...)
  • I have done debris removal myself by renting a dumpster and having friends over to help.

If you dont mind - Please keep us posted and what you find out and eventually what you do to the yard.  Mine is just a blank slate and would love some ideas too

  • @homeowner I need to remove big, heavy sheets of plywood that are covering the entire surface of the yard, which is more than my friends and I can realistically DIY. I love Kings County Nursery, but I primarily need someone for the debris, concrete/patio work, and installing some kind of surface to replace the plywood sheets. I would love grass, but also want to research some easier-maintenance options. Any thoughts?
  • Sorry, if its more than you and some friends can do with a dumpster rental, sounds like you may need a 1-800-GOT-JUNK kind of service. They definitely have NYC offices and they would do the debris removal. I don't have a GC for concrete/patio work (we opted to leave our 1/2 concrete yard as is. As for the grass alternative, last time I got landscaped we decided to cover our 10x10 square of grass with a low cost option of wood chips. It was cheaper than sod, kept the weeds at bay and required only a little raking/sweeping when the chips blew off.

As we didn't use that center block for anything (BBQ/table was on the concrete area and plantings on the border around the outside of the full yard), this was actually a great option for us. Only downside was that the ferrals that then used the backyards used to come by and sun themselves. As most of that colony disappeared after 1-2 years, it actually wasn't a big deal long term.
