Harbor Fitness Pricing Policy
What's up with Harbor Fitness' policy to not discuss prices over the phone? They said they would only discuss the prices if i went in to see the facility and would only quote me estimated pricing on the phone (which they said runs somehting around $60 a month for a year memebership). I went on a tour of the place 2 years ago (which I told the woman on the phone) when i was mildly considering joining a gym. Now that I am going to go ahead and actually join I'll go elsewhere.

Isn't this fairly standard policy for gyms? I've only gotten prices during a site visit, but I thought they usuallly liked to keep the prices close to the vest. I always thought this was bc they offer incentives to get you to join (free months, free massages, etc) and always offer "special" seasonal discounts. Price competition may also play a part... makes it more difficult for Crunch to gauge their competitiveness.

the slope gym on union st. and synergy in manhattan wouldn't discuss prices over the phone either.
crunch on flatbush avenue near the q train says they'll slice $150 off the membership fee. does that mean that they'll cut $150 from a annual fee of $200 or that they'll slice $150 off of a monthly fee of $999? i don't know. -

Yah definitly- go in and check it out-- tell them that Crunch said they would give you a certain price and try to get a lower one. I pay $69 a month for Crunch and its great. You should go in and see if the amenities/cleanliness/etc measure up to their price. -
I didn't realize that it was fairly standard practice. Either way, I'll be joining the Y.

yeah, when I was shopping around it seemed like no matter which one I called, they would not quote a price over the phone. I actually called a few different NYSC and talked to different people, all of whom would NOT give me the price. Finally, I said, look, I won't even come in to your gym until you tell me the price and quit jerking my chain. Someone finally, and reluctantly did. I think they figure it's easier to sweet-talk you into a membership when they can show you all the goodies and use their sales skills in person. Makes sense, especially when you think of how friggin much memberships cost these days, but it's still frustrating!! If you press hard enough, they'll probably quote you a price, but it seems to be pretty common practice to avoid it. I also had the same issue shopping for cars several years ago.

NYSC in manhattan (cooper sq at astor pl) advertises $99 per month! $99 a month! what the hell? as if thats a deal?
I went to the Crunch on Flatbush and asked their prices. The manager said the october deal is $49 initiation (150 off) and $79 a month.. it all depends on the month, when i joined it was $0 initiation at $69 a month.
just walk in and ask -
With gyms, you can name your price and terms. Try it. You should be pleasantly suprised.

99 bucks is a fucking rip off! wow!
With NYSC and possibly other large chains, look for one that is just opening up, then go there, get a charter membership at a discounted rate, and you can use ANY of their gyms, any time. I got into the new one at Varric a week or two before it opened. I pay 69 a month, which I still feel is steep, but I can use any of them, plus ones when I travel to boston or LA or DC. I was at one in Times Square last night, I thought it was kinda dodgey though. There was nowhere to stretch near the cardio machines, and no towels in the men's locker room, wtf?! The one in the slope is nice though, as is the one on Varric.
It is probably a good idea to at least try to name your own price. I should have thought of that! -
See, this is one reason I will probably never join a gym. I don't want to haggle over the price. There should just be a price to join the gym, not all this crap with special deals and initiation fees or no initiation fees blah blah blah, and maybe a better deal if you can talk them into it, and the nagging feeling that someone else probably got a better deal. It sounds like buying a used car!

I agree, it can be a hassel working thru the whole gym iniation thing, but excercising in my apartment is a lot harder; despite all the weights I own, I just don't get the same motivation. Plus when it's too crappy out, I don't really feel like going for a run or a bike ride, so the gym is all that keeps me from becoming a lard ass (and given the amount of desserts I eat, I would certainly explode if I did not have my daily workout!)
