I can see how this would be highly attractive for some folks.... Another reason why folks will want to move here. Fascinating...

As a result of being so adherent to Schneerson's teachings, the Lubavitch seem to be at a disadvantage:"Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, had forbidden the building of an eruv in Crown Heights, Rabbi Osdoba wrote, “It’s self-understood that the Rebbe’s decision is final, and it is forbidden for anyone to help or support in anyway [sic] whatsoever, the building of an eruv in our neighborhood.”The impact seems to be that they can object to other temples establishing an Eruv, but not establish one of their own.

It seems someone is dismantling it:
-
It has now been vandalized/dismantled 3x.
-
There is now disagreement on whether the Lubavitch can build an Eruv of their own:
-
As a VERY assimilated secular Jew I find this discussion oddly fascinating.
-
As someone who was raised Catholic, I now understand why dioceses exist.

The rabbinic details regarding eruv are some of the most complex in all of Judaism. Anytime in history a eruv has been built there was fierce debate and opposition.
My rabbinic knowledge of Eruv is indeed limited, but I'm well read on the history and background of it.
Suffice it say, that the debate wont be settled on the internet, especially not with anonymous comments in all directions.

No, it certainly won't....but here's some context of what is driving it:
-
As a non-observant Jew who has lived in CH south for 40 years now, I really don't see this section of CH "modernizing" all that much. From what I can tell, the more modern Othodox are mostly north and west of the traditional CH. Jews were always welcomed in the main synagogue on EP and in the stores here. Unlike the case in some parts of Williamsburg, there have not been signs excluding people with immodest dress ... though there have, at times, been signs reminding one of what the rebbe considered proper. That being said, CH has always been rather accepting of non- or somewhat observant Jews and, aside from the high holy days and and a few others, I really haven't felt "apart" from the Jewish community here. North of EP, however, is another story, even though some traditionally Lubavitch families have moved in there. On the fringes of CHS, one sees more of that choice to which this article is referring.
