I believe the argument here is that "troublemaker" is too lenient (and possibly juvenile) a word to use on these people. "Someone who causes problems" is a HUGE understatement for someone who shoots another person in the face at point blank range.... no?

I kind of wish Errol had stated something like:

"As a result of this year and prior years, I am of the perspective that the NYPD -along with the "community"- is not powerful enough to prevent significant Jouvert violence.

While you disagree with this view, you seem to believe that it is not powerful enough to stop the event.

Which do you believe would take more power?"

@whynot_31, are you saying you don't think the suspension of J'Ouvert will take hold? Or maybe it'll become what it once was... a series of backyard parties and bar celebrations? Or by saying "see everyone next year", are you referring to how the actual Labor Day Caribbean Parade will be a much more positive daytime celebration for many people (not mourning the loss of people from the night/morning before)?

Jouvert will live on, this just a matter of what form.

The street celebration may shrink in size if the city creates a large setting that is controlled.

Doing so would allow the city to marginalize those who still celebrate on the street, and make their safety not the city's problem. The NYPD would be given permission to be aggressive against them.

One person I don't think we will see leadership and risk taking from is the present mayor.

Mothers, however, are going to prohibit their kids from attending the street celebrations because they have concluded the more police, lighting and flyers are not enough.
