I've noted that the awning and MySpace sign has been removed, and a sign noting a construction permit has been posted. Been waiting to see what happens with this space.
(BTW I'm a new commenter to Brooklynian, after occasionally lurking for a while. Been in CH for a little over 2 years, though have had friends and relatives in the area for longer.)
-
I believe construction is starting on this space very soon. There was a discussion about the proposed restaurant/bar with sidewalk seating at a Tuesday community board committee meeting. December is the target open date.
-
Thanks. Yes, apparently an entity known as DoraLu LLC would like to open here, with a full license that includes a sidewalk café.
-
one worker described the owners vision of a boozy sandwich cafe. hooray!
-
I can totally get on board with a boozy sandwich cafe. Like a place I can get a hot sandwich and a beer?
-
They seem to have requested a trademark for the name "Birdie"

"Two other residents at the subcommittee meeting raised the issue of whether another business serving alcohol on the street would further change the area's family feel. They also worried that Brennan's venture could force out existing small businesses."If by "families" they mean street gangs and by "small businesses" they mean illegal drug trafficking, then, yes. I believe this place will change the area's current "family feel."

We should retitle this -- Sunday Routine is coming! https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20160912/crown-heights/tapas-style-sandwich-spot-sunday-routine-open-on-nostrand-avenueAnd I think it is great that there will be a bustling business on this corner. With the vacancies, and the void created by the corner of the Key Food, and the heat on the block, I hope that more "eyes on the street" will help to keep some of our more negative neighborhood elements at bay.
-
yeah That "Family feel" comment made me hoot too. I think they are more concerned that the new people moving in dont get too many ammenities. I look at all the existing small businesses, numerous 99cent stores, pawn shop, liquor stores, the fancy potato chip boutique "organic deli" and hair salons. It would be a shame to lose any of those if it meant getting a nicer place to eat and drink.
-
As a result of: NYS SLA having the default position of issuing a license, and Community boards being only advisory, people hoping for new businesses have little to fear from such community board members. ...they effectively rant at the wall.
-
Nostrand Ave 'Family Feel' - hahahaha!
-
I walked by this place today and construction was not yet apparent. Maybe they are still negotiating with contractors?
-
If I'm not mistaken this was the corner store where you could buy a "certified pre-owned" firearm back in the day. If this is the right place it had an entire secret room complete with a hidden false wall that didn't show up on the building plans.Having said that I get that the Community board would like some other businesses than bars and pubs on the street. It would be nice for the street to have a mix of businesses that cater to both old and new, which means more than coffee and bars for the newbies, and something other than hair supply and Chinese food and ital shacks for the old timers.
-
I have found that community boards are pretty worthless when it comes to creating a diverse business mix, but have seen some positive efforts by merchants associations.
They know that too much competition is a bad thing ...let's offer a variety of products and each make some profit. -
Construction well underway...
-
Heads up: In addition to a liquor license, this place has filed an application for outdoor sidewalk seating.
-
Build out appears almost complete and @tsarina has been told the hope to open in 3 weeks.
However, Liq lic is stil in pending status

My fiancée and I went there on Sunday, hoping to try a sandwich, yet they still only had beverages. Had a bloody mary; it was made with wasabi (instead of horseradish), as well as chopped up jalapeno. 'Twas tasty. The open windows create a nice cross breeze. Bartender, who was at Sweet Bar, informed us that they'll have food Thursday of this week.
-
whoops, they're in the news and not in a positive way. will they go the way of the crow bar or will they be more popular than ever? http://gothamist.com/2017/07/18/new_crown_heights_eatery_advertises.php

The local activists continue to attempt to define anything that caters to new residents as evil/racist/insensitive. I do like that they are reliable.
-
I dunno, advertising the bullet holes and serving 40 oz bottles of rose in paper bags does come across as tone-deaf. And I'm a "newer" resident that a place like this is catering to.
-
someone posted this to my neighborhood FB group. unsurprisingly, "newer" residents were outraged and in a cycle of indignation over the tone-deafness. however, born and raised residents didn't seem to think it was a big deal, or they even liked it. funny how that happens.
-
Ha, yeah that actually doesn't surprise me.
-
I mostly think that this isn't that big of a deal but that the owner has made a few weird choices, including calling her place an "oasis" on a street where there are so many new bars and restaurants.
-
It will be an oasis until more such places open. Then, it will be just yet another place.
