Held at gunpoint?!
A friend is subletting out a north Slope apartment. The apartment is on Douglass and Fifth - very close to the Bogota restaurant. A couple who live in Prospect Heights went to see the apartment, loved it but said they couldn't take it because they were too worried about the "security issues" of it being in such a dangerous neighborhood. What?? They referenced Baltic Street being a very dangerous area and talked about some kind of local projects. According to them they knew one or more people who had been held up at gunpoint in that neighborhood. What's goin' on? After all, the couple are from Prospect Heights - isn't that nabe way shadier than north Slope these days??

Watch the police blotter in those local free papers if you want to keep up with local crime incidents . . . the only area that has always stood out to me is 8th Ave and President/Union, usually people held up after going to one of the ATMs on Flatbush. The robber has an easy escape into the park.
Personally, I think people are nervous about what they are unfamiliar with. Fifth Ave?? Lord knows I've walked down 4th and 5th Aves from the Atlantic/Pacific express subway stop a hundred times late at night . . .
There *are* projects that start at 3rd Ave and head into Boerum Hill, but I couldn't tell you what the deal is there. More gunshot is a good guess.

About a month ago my 24-year old daughter was robbed at gunpoint (had a gun jabbed into her side) at 10:30 pm on 2nd Street by 6th Avenue. They got a measley $11 and also her razor cellphone. Young dude told her he would shoot her in the head if she resisted and didn't walk away quietly..........so I am just trying to say that this can happen anywhere and at any time.

Until Cucina's and 200 5th Ave got the ball rolling, 5th Avenue was indeed a shooting gallery not so long ago. I witnessed a shooting happen at a store on the corner of President and 5th. It wasn't unusual to hear gunfire in that area. Then again like another poster said, shit happens everywhere in NYC.

Yeah, 5th Ave was a much different place not all that long ago. JJ Byrne Park was notorious for drug dealing. 5th Ave. in the South Slope is still a bit sketchy, at least in the immediate vicinity of the OTB, but much different than ten years ago.

I agree that 5th Ave in South Slope is a totally different story to 5th Ave in the North Slope. -

Thats horrible: I'm sorry to hear that. My very broke, very unstable ex lives (lived?) on 2nd Street and 6th Ave. I sincerely hope it wasn't him. He was so unstable that it is sadly possible that he is now sticking people up in the street. -
I lived at 5th and Baltic about 8 years ago, when the area was much less developed and generally sketchier than it is now, and I never felt unsafe walking around at night or encountered any serious problems. I definitely wouldn't hesitate to live in that area now, at least not for safety-related reasons. It may not be the most charming section of the Slope, but I doubt that you're much more likely to have a gun pulled on you there than wherever.
Oh, and I live in PH now, and while I feel very comfortable here, I would not say that it's safER than the 5th/Baltic area of the North Slope. -

Wasn't there a crack house on President and 5th about 10 years ago? I remember there was always the sound of gunfire (or so it seemed) then. -
I was held up at gunpoint 7 years ago when I first moved to the slope. Actually it was on my very first day - the day I moved in. It happened on Caroll and PPW. My wallet litterally had not one dollar in it. They were pissed, through my wallet on the street and told me to walk away from them. They then ran away. Didn't even take my credit cards. Scary thing is it was a Sunday night, only about 7 or 8pm. It can happen anywhere.

I was robbed about 6 months ago on a Friday night, about 11PM at 1st Street close to the corner of 6th Avenue.
Two guys, one with a knife. They must have waited on the corner and ran from 7th Ave on 1st when it was clear that the street is empty (exept for me) .
I think it makes sense that they come to neighborhoods that the "rich" live in. They got no money from me - some pepole were crossing 6th Ave and they ran away again towards 7th Ave. -
There was a murder at 2nd and 5th about 18mo ago and numerous robberies along 5th Ave between Union and 9th.
Yes things are much different on 5th then they were a few years ago, but those of you that think it is Cobble Hill in terms of crime are fooling themselves. -
I have a friend who works in the Brooklyn DA's office and she says that 6th ave in the Slope is a common area for robberies and assaults. I tend to avoid it at night, walking on 5th or 7th instead and then only crossing 6th ave once I'm at the block I want.
-
I thought the avenues are safer at night. My new strategy is to walk down to 6th on Union, which is almost always busy - with cars and dog walkers - and then walk on 6th home. I find the side streets more empty and inviting to robbers.
-
along time a go 5 ave seem very dangerous.

Was this murder a mugging gone wrong? What were the details? -

Why are muggers targeting 6th Ave? Is it way less busy than 5th and 7th at night? I frequently walk along 5th Ave (between Douglass and Union area) very late at night, even at 4am; it's always very busy, even at that time. Somebody would have to be nuts to whip out a knife and do a mugging when so many people are around. -
It was on 1st Street near 6th Avenue.
I am not sure, why they target 6th Avenue, if they do. I am very glad to hear that even later at night 5th is ok to walk around on. -
6th Ave is very quiet at night. There are very few stores anywhere on 6th Ave., so there aren't a lot of people walking around like there are on 5th and 7th. Same with 8th Avenue.

If I remember correctly it was a fight that started up on 6th or 7th and went on for some time w/ all the requisite screaming etc... and ended with a shooting at 5th and 2nd. I beleve both perpetrator and vitim lived in the neighborhood. -
a friend of mine was nearly mugged on degraw street between 5th and 4th a couple weeks ago a little after midnight. he was outside talking on the phone and three guys walked past him then turned around, walked up to him, stopped and just stared at him. they were probably expecting him to just turn over his wallet but instead my friend just gave them a "psh give me a break" look and walked to his apartment as fast as he could.
the guys were probably so dumbfounded that they didn't bother to chase him down. -
A girl I know was held up after work (still light out) a year or so ago on President (maybe Carroll, I can't remember exactly) btw. PPW and 8th Ave. She took her keys out of her bag, walked up her stoop to open the door and a teenage girl came up behind her and stuck a gun in her back. She gave up her purse, and the girl ran back to the street and threw it to her (boy)friend who was waiting behind a car and they took off running towards the park.
Two teen crackheads. Got caught, too......and, even though I don't think it makes a bit of difference, they were white.
I say this because people have stereotypes about what a criminal looks like. They can be white teenage chicks in broad daylight on a "nice" street in a "good" part of town. -
About stereotypes -
You are right. The two guys who wanted to rob me were not black either. I think they were latinos, but it happened so fast that they could have been white as well.
Is there anything we can do to prevent being robbed??? -

When my daughter was robbed, she was busily chatting on her cellphone. I think people need to be more aware of their surroundings, etc. and just pay more attention in general!

i walk around south slope on 5th avenue, at least below 18th, and I've never had a problem, besides a guy that touched my boob once. I have come up from the 25th Street subway at midnight or 1 by myself and have never had a problem (knock on wood).

I don't know about that post... I've lived on 8th Ave & President for 2 yrs and on Carroll btw 8th and PPW for the 2yrs before that and have never seen anything remotely dodgy. I really fail to understand how a mugger lurking on 8th Ave would successfully identify people coming from 7th Ave banks or why that particular block would be so ideal.... there's no direct park access until you get to Garfield. Regardless, it seems pretty unlikely. -
I was mugged on President near 8th in broad daylight 3 years ago.
It was during that rash of muggings around Easter that year. It was a pair-- one on foot, one in a car--and they did maybe a dozen in PS within a week before they got caught. Sometimes they had a knife. (Not when they robbed me, and I had a total white trash "Get back here with my purse, motherfucker!" reaction.)
Geniuses they were, they used my cell to call friends and order takeout. Which made their apprehension and conviction on multiple counts quite easy. So last laugh, morons! You averaged $20 per mugging, but got multiple felonies in return! Crime really doesn't pay. -

I suspect the furthest reaches of Prospect Heights and into Crown Heights are a better place to get shot by someone you know if you're involved in a business-related altercation. However North Slope might be a better place to get robbed at random or broken into than the nearer regions of Prospect Heights, as discerning robbers know where the money is, not to mention more people stumbling out of bars and easy escape routes.
For a broad picture, compare the ratios of different kinds of crime (e.g. property vs. violent) for the 77th vs. 78th precincts, available here. -

Wow - very illuminating jenni. While it's a horrible thing to have happen, from what you describe these sound like fairly isolated events.

A dozen muggings by the same two people is "isolated?"
I'm just saying that area is more vulnerable to crime than you think. There're a bunch of banks right there, and the neighborhood is filled with at least perceived affluent people, who probably feel guard down in their 'hood, and who are often too filled with liberal guilt to listen to their initial gut feelings about potentially sketchy people (I know I'm guilty--hey, I had a copy of Mother Jones in the bag those guys stole!). That can make for easy pickin's, if robbing random people is your thing.
Howdy, Stranger!
