Know a great dog groomer? — Brooklynian

Know a great dog groomer?

A few years ago, I successfully managed to switch my health and dental care providers, hair cutters and colorists, pediatricians, massage therapists and the like to those living within a twelve block radius of my Sterling Place home.

I'd like my new little puppy--a retriever/poddle mix who I suspect will soon become verrrry shaggy--to benefit from the same convenience. Any suggestions for a good local dog groomer?

  • I know there's one on Flatbush, but can't vouch for it. Never been there.
  • I don't know any groomers, but Brooklyn Dog House is EXCELLENT doggie day care and boarding. When you board, your dog gets to play with other dogs (of similar size and temperment) all day instead of sitting in a crate. The staff is excellent, and they were willing to take my dog who does not like strangers and is generally difficult (Difficult to the point where he's been banned from traditional boarding establishments in our old town). After 2 visits he was comfortable with the staff and he actually plays with other dogs, which is never something he did before! Malcolm (the owner) is great and really willing to work with you.

This sounds like a total shill for the place, but really, they're fantastic. I didn't think I'd find a kennel that would TAKE my dog, let alone one he would like, but Oscar-Mayer loves it there to the point where he starts pulling on the leash and jumping up and down when we get within a block or so.
  • Posh Pets is great. They are on Flatbush between Bergen and St. Marks.

The owner Lenny is great with my two dogs. I pay $50 per dog. They have a website too. Type in Posh Pets Brooklyn on Yahoo and it will come up.

    Good luck!
  • I second the Posh Pets recommendation. The owner and staff are all really nice and they do a thorough job (even express the a-glands, if you know what I mean). Our JRT has been going there since they opened and she looks and smells great every time she's done.
  • Animal Kind on 7th Avenue provides grooming as well as veterinary services ... I notice a lot of people bring their pets there for grooming.

(oops, not within your 12-block radius .. but hey, a trip out of the nabe might do you good ... )
  • I am a posh pets fan. they do a great job grooming my poodle maltese mix...besides being friendly and somewhat affordable.
