We should give 637 Nostrand and 635 Nostrand a thread (at St Marks)

I am a long-term resident. I was meh about the explanation about the bullet hole in the wall, but the 40 oz bottle of rose being served in a paper bag (and her blase explanation about it) rubbed me the wrong way. She got dragged in the comments accompanying the Gothamist story. http://gothamist.com/2017/07/18/new_crown_heights_eatery_advertises.php Also:beardzoid said:I dunno, advertising the bullet holes and serving 40 oz bottles of rose in paper bags does come across as tone-deaf. And I'm a "newer" resident that a place like this is catering to.The comparisons to Franklin Avenue are no mistake. "As someone who lives on Nostrand, I was getting tired of walking to Franklin," Brennan said. "It's three blocks, but it's three long blocks. You just deserve something close, and a hang out, especially if you live on New York [Avenue] or Schenectady or something like that."
She opened up something on Nostrand because the three block walk to Franklin was too far, and she wanted something closer. If someone were to come in from Schenectady, that's further from Nostrand than Franklin is from Nostrand! That part of her comment didn't make sense.So...Who's out on Schenectady anyway?

Streeteasy seems to show renovated units on Troy and beyond.

The backlash from the Gothamist and EaterNY articles seems to have snowballed. These signs were posted around the neighborhood today.

And here comes the apology: http://gothamist.com/2017/07/19/post_207.php

CHop Shop Grub Shop used to be on Nostrand, but went out of business after it mocked the impact of Stop and Frisk.

Btw, it seems like the next event re: this bar will be on Saturday. http://www.grubstreet.com/2017/07/nyc-bar-summerhill-controversy.html ...I'll be out of town.

I vaguely remember this. That was at the very least tacky and tone-deaf.whynot_31 said:Which received media in various sources. http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/39198/goodbye-chop-chop-grub-shop-on-nostrand-near-st-marks-and-dean
It would have been wise to have someone tweak Summerhill's press release to be less tone-deaf as well.

Was it a coincidence or not? It's my understanding that restaurants frequently fail anyway. https://www.thebalance.com/ten-reasons-restaurants-fail-2888628whynot_31 said:CHop Shop Grub Shop used to be on Nostrand, but went out of business after it mocked the impact of Stop and Frisk. -
It seems to me that this would be a perfect time for a nonprofit that serves the community to hit this business up for a donation or to do a couple of fundraisers. Maybe an idea for folks from YO SOS or Crown Heights Youth Collective or elsewhere....

I don't know that either wish to play politics to that degree. However, Geoffrey Davis might. https://m.facebook.com/jamesedavisfoundation

Seems like this gal may have ruined her chances of success. At least whoever moves into the space next will have a built out restaurant...

Eater has published the press release. Based on all of the hype, I really expected it to directly say something like "While in the past this neighborhood, and specifically this corner, was known for people buying guns and drinking 40 oz malt liquors out of bags, Summerhill serves 40oz bottles of Rose and fancy sandwiches." ...which it does, and doesn't at the same time: https://ny.eater.com/2017/7/24/16019934/summerhill-crown-heights-press-release-nyc
