The 2017 Labor Day Carnival thread
Not to be confused with the 2017 J'ouvert thread: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/47534/posturing-planning-conversation-and-positioning-begins-re-jouvert-2017#latest
That said, the flyers advising car owners not to park on the Eastern Parkway service roads between Thur and Tues have gone up. And, the parks department has put up barriers around the plantings at Grand Army Plaza. ...the time is arriving!

Auxillary lights are going up along Eastern Parkway. Can someone explain the logic? Is the Labor Day parade now happening at night?
-
Monday evening is problematic for the police when crowds have not dispersed
-
Cars may be in short supply. You could take LIRR to airtrain.

@whynot_31 and @MOD ... thank you both!

According to the Curbed article it sounds like anyone can join main parade, but I thought it was just J'Ouvert that anyone could join?
"Thanks to heightened security measures, getting into the parade route will be similar to entering Times Square on New Year’s Eve. There will be 12 checkpoints along the two-mile route and large backpacks, large bags, alcohol, and weapons are prohibited."
Am I misreading? -
I'm surprised no-one has commented on this: http://gothamist.com/2017/09/01/crown_heights_nimby_skates.php

@mugofmead111 mentioned it on this thread: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/47534/posturing-planning-conversation-and-positioning-begins-re-jouvert-2017#latest I guess we will see if the arrest (sans prosecution) will be enough to get her to buy some earplugs and chill.

Yikes... some stabbings and one shooting during the parade... http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/stabbed-route-new-york-caribbean-carnival-parade-article-1.3468435

"Four people were stabbed and one person was shot along the New York Caribbean Carnival Parade route — a bloody sideshow of mayhem at the annual Brooklyn event." Indeed. Here's some specific coverage of that shooting: "CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- One man was shot near the West Indian Day Parade Route in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. It happened on Eastern Parkway between Brooklyn and New York avenues just before 5 p.m. on Monday. The 22-year-old victim was taken to Kings County Hospital in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to his torso. He is expected to survive. So far, there are no suspects and no arrests.Hopefully the violence does not continue now that the parade is over."http://abc7ny.com/2375890/ I'll post some happy, colorful photos on this thread (that I will take from my Facebook feed), when I get a chance.

It appears there has been another shooting. This one at Nostrand and Lefferts about an hour ago.

Looks fun though it's hard to beat the the kids who did the same thing (knew every word!) at the kiddie paradewhynot_31 said: -
This writer states that fewer people attended the parade this year. CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- One man was shot, while another was stabbed, near the West Indian Day Parade Route in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The shooting happened on Eastern Parkway between Brooklyn and New York avenues around 4:45 p.m. on Monday. The 22-year-old victim was taken to Kings County Hospital in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to his torso. He is expected to survive. Then just minutes later, a man was stabbed in front of 677 Eastern Parkway. That's along the parade route. It happened just before 5 p.m. He was taken to Kings County Hospital where he is in stable condition. "Nobody got killed, a couple of them got hurt, but it was better than last year," a paradegoer said. And that, this year, will have to do for good news at the West Indian Day Parade. Yes, one man was shot and another stabbed, but last year two men were killed, and four were shot. The NYPD had 300 more police officers assigned to the parade this year. Bags were checked for alcohol and weapons. Not everyone liked that. "I understand why they are doing it, but at the same time it kills the vibe," a woman said. "They just want to make it a little bit safer, no one wants to end it, I don't want to see it go," a man said. Whether it was last year's violence or this year's police presence, fewer people lined the route Monday. Some said that compared to years past: "More pageantry, more pageantry I have to say less guard rails, but you know it was a different world then and you must adapt to the changes," a spectator said. "Not as many people on the road definitely, the stuff that has happened in the past has kind of marred, but you know we're having a great time," a participant said. But there was still dancing and so many colorful costumes. "I had a great time, I love how everybody comes together," a woman said. Even as the parade ended and the crowd thinned out, police remained on the scene. So far, there are no suspects and no arrests in either case. http://abc7ny.com/man-shot-another-stabbed-near-west-indian-day-parade-route-in-crown-heights/2375890/
