decent shrinks? — Brooklynian

decent shrinks?

I fully admit to being at least partially nuts. finding a shrink in NYC is problematic at the best of times (they're all booked, or they don't accept insurance, or they're taking month-long vacays, etc). but, you know, I'm still nuts. so ....
anyone have any recommendations (feel free to PM them to me for privacy) for either shrinks OR MDs who also do therapy? if you know that they accept UHC, that would be great info, too. no worries if you don't know.

  • My friend is an amatuer shrink maybe he can help you out
  • I was told by a shrink in the neighborhood that there aren't really any good shrinks that accept insurance... the fee they would receive is way too low. This depressed me.

You could try calling/going to Brooklyn Center For Psychotherapy, on Flatbush & 7th Ave (718-622-2000)... it is more of a clinic, but they say they accept insurance & have sliding fees. I know they were helpful to a friend of mine, and they may have more info regarding in network providors, especially in our area.

Keep in mind that you can go to someone for 1 visit with a critical eye, and only stick with them if you really like them. It seems that if one tried a bunch of shrinks out this way, a match would be found eventually. It is a tedious process, especially if you are feeling urgent in your need for a shrink... But if you really need to have someone who accepts insurance, and can't get a referral... it could be a good way to go about it.

Also, I can give you names of a couple of people who do not accept insurance ... 2 of which are somewhat flexible about payment. Let me know if you are interested. My UHC pays 50% for out of network providors, grudgingly. Not sure if you & I have the same plan.
  • I sent you a private message, but I think for some reason it may not have gone through. It seems to be sitting in my "outbox" rather in my "sent" box. Please let me know whether or not you got it.

Messages sent and found residing in the "outbox" simply mean that the intended recipient has not checked their mailbox as of yet. Once the message has been opened, it will appear in the "sent" folder.
  • Thanks for the info !!
  • that was from FLUTE ...
  • Subject: finding therapy

I recommend calling LifeNet (1-800-543-3638). They are the City's 24 hour referral hotline for therapy anywhere in the five boros. I am sure they will tell you Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy, maybe Park Slope Center for Mental Health or Interfaith Outpatient Clinic... they mostly give clinic referrals (and can make sure they take your insurance) but they also give a couple of numbers for private practice listings in the City too.

And marthajoy, good advice about selecting a therapist. Be selective!
