movie buffs in the house??
Sorry for the short notice, but Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It", his first movie and one of the best Brooklyn films of all time (and arguably his best), is playing at BAM tonite only. Next show at 9:15pm.
Any film buffs out there like me? Let's get a movie night going or something. I'm going to the cinema alone all the time.
For now, off to BAM. Later..

just got back. I LOVE that film.
BAM's playing great old films all the time. A retrospective of Pedro Almodovar's career starts this weekend! And they were showing a few of Alfred Hitchcock's best last month too. Not to mention the good new films showing there on the regular.
boh! -
you should talk to my boyfriend, he's a Union camera assistant for feature films. I can't even watch a movie with him because he's just spitting out facts about the director and the gaffer and the lens/filter they are using on a particular shot. I had to set a rule that he can't quote movies around me.
But...
i'll go to movies too! -
Oh. My. God.
who wants to see the Almodovar movies? -

That's awesome! I would love to learn about that kind of stuff while watching a film instead of during the making of one.
What movies has your boyfriend worked on? I used to be an agent and know a lot of DPs. Wonder if he's worked for any of 'em. -

he's mostly new york based but used to go between chicago and philly too.. LA soon. -
he's worked on some cool stuff, and definitely a handful that I assisted in booking camera people on. Shortbus musta been a trip for him.
We should all grab a drink in the hood one of these days. -
I think Do The Right Thing beats She's Gotta Have It, by a mile.
The opening sequence with Rosie Perez and her boxing dance = brilliant. When that opened in Times Square...widescreen...the house was on fire. Almost every film Spike's made is worth seeing, for one reason or another.
I'm a total film geek, documentary inclined, with higher education in the subject.
LOVE that the Almodovar films have been rereleased/remastered. A chance to see Matador on the big screen? I'm a little scared...
Gots to go see Law of Desire and see if it's still my favorite. I love everything from Live Flesh and beyond. Hated Tie Me Up Tie Me Down
And Shortbus! I love JCM. Girlfriend won't go so I have not yet . . .
LeeHo
BAM won't give you horror films, unless you count esoteric, like the Japanese ghost stories, or Almodovar's Matador.
That's (almost) a slasher film. -
kinda sad that they're not showing what have I done to deserve this, which is my favorite Almodovar ever. I love mujeres al borde ... and how relevant, given the terrorist subplot.

I haven't seen law of desire or matador in forever. must go see those, I guess. -

My boyfriend worked on that movie, but we have yet to see the featured version. He said the shoot was crazy (which i guess can be expected of a JCM shoot) and most of the sex / masturbation scenes were Actual sex/masturbation by the actors.

brown bunny set the standard of indie sex romps?
we're going to see it soon, reviews were mixed tho i heard. -
yep.. that's exactly right. And JCM holds nothing back. It's pretty messed up, and I can't imagine having to work in an environment like that. A pal of mine was an art department PA on the film and had to move around the mattress on which dozens of people did it for this orgi scene. Nasty.
The film's okay though. Because of the sensibillity of JCM and the sort of light-heartedness of the film, the graphic sex has a totally different effect than something like a serious drama with real sex would. Or porn, for that matter.
Anyhooo... let me know what you all think.
