Best internet service?

I've been happy with verizon dsl. I've never had any other service, though, so I don't have anything to compaire it to.
One thing. I don't like using the email from their site, but I use Microsoft Entourage, so I never have to go there. -
Cablevision seems to be one of the only cable providers around that area. I have them for cable, phone, and internet (at a reduced rate if you get all 3 services) and have never experienced any problems.

I would LOVE to be able to get Cablevision/Optimum, since it is much cheaper, but it's not available over here on fulton and st. felix. My only cable provider option is TimeWarner, which is expensive and sucks! They have a 'triple-play' competitor to Optimum, but the cable is a 'lite' version with less channels that regular, and the internet is slower. So I pay more for 'full' high speed internet - and it's pretty crappy. I was thinking about downloading one of those meter apps to measure how much bandwidth I'm REALLY getting.
Also, I have Vonage, and I suspect (call me paranoid) that they specifically downgrade quality to interfere with Vonage, because they want you to buy their service. -
I've been using Road Runner. I get 100 mpbs connection speeds and have, unlike my TV, had virtually no problems. As much as I hate Time Warner, I actually recommend their internet service. You can't beat a cable modem for speed.

Yup. I agree with all that escap said.
Note: We have Directv, not TW Cable -
escap, are you really getting 100mbps? roadrunner advertises a max of 5mbps, which is still plenty for most applications.
btw, anybody with time warner can get earthlink cable internet for $41.95 a month. it has the same speed as RR. -
I'm actually looking into a Time-Warner DSL/cable combo. Does anyone have this in the Bedford/Hancock area or thereabouts? Thx in advance.

Unfortunately I'm not tech savvy. I'm not talking download speeds here--just when I put my cursor over the connection icon on the lower right hand corner it says "Status: 100 Mbps". And 54 off the wireless router. Perhaps the 5mbps is referring to something else?

the 100mbps refers to your network card's capacity (as does the 54 for the wireless). that means it could take a max of 100/54mbps. but the signal you get from RR should max out at 5. there's a really nice speed test on the speakeasy site that can roughly tell you your speed:

thank you for letting me geek out here. -
Ah, I stand corrected. According to your link I'm at 6,212 kbps on my laptop. I guess this is fast?

Yeah, we did the test last night. For paying for 5 Mbps, we get.... 1.5 Mbps max.
Cable internet IS technically faster than DSL. However, with Cable, connection speeds can depend on how many other users are using the system in your area at the same time as you.
Now, that is the story that Time Warner will say when I call them, but I'm still angry.
Here's what I love from the Time Warner website:
http://www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/products/internet/default.htmlChat, play games, download large files and blaze across the Internet with lightning speeds of up to 5 Mbps*—that’s three times the speed of Verizon’s standard DSL package and 100 times faster than dial-up!
So really, I'm getting DSL-quality service.
*'Triple the speed' of Verizon claim is based on Time Warner Cable High Speed Online's (TWCHSO) maximum download speed of 5.0 Mbps versus Verizon's standard package maximum download speed of 1.5 Mbps. -
I get a wide range of results. The first time I did it, my download speed was 8876 kBps. Subsequent tries went as low as 396 kBps and as high as 4900 kBps.
Weird!
The upload speed was pretty consistent at about 1700 kBps. -
Just tested again and got 9154 kBps download speed.

yeah it can really vary a lot, but if you get consistently low speeds there are tweaks you can make to your system that can help. on broadbandreports.com there's a Tools section that has helpful info.
i just moved to a cablevision area so i have optimum online, which maxes out at 15mbps. that's cool but when websurfing you don't really see much of a difference, so sheer speed isn't alway a necessity. but on bittorrent it's a different story
