Where are some good places to check out live Jazz in the neighborhood - any suggestions?

  • Barbes on 9th and 6th or Puppets Jazz on 5th ave betw 1st and 2nd st.
  • Definitely check out Puppets, they have some great jazz there.
  • night and day.
  • A second for night and day. They have been booking some excellent up and coming artists.
  • Night and Day has paper in the windows. They are coming back as Biscuit BBQ, perhaps with a different kind of live music.
Some of their scheduled stuff moved to Puppets.

Barbes is excellent - Tuesday nights with Slavic Soul Party!

  • I am so sorry that Night and Day will be closing! I'm also surprised. There have been several times when it was fully booked and I have been unable to secure a table. Does anyone know what happened?
  • hmmm... i might have seen this coming about night and day.

i love that place, the food was really good, and inexpensive. i would go in there to do beer tastings with Max, the manager, who was also the owner's son, and about a month or so ago, he was no longer working there.

sucks, i really liked their food! some of the best fries in the slope too.
  • Freddy's also has jazz bands at times (although it's really Prospect Heights).
  • Subject: Check out CIM

The Center for Improvisational Music has Concerts, Workshops, and Open Sessions (kind of like a Jam Session) happening all the time. It's great, with people like Jim Black, Steve Coleman, and Ravi Coltrane around. It's on Douglass between 3rd and 4th st. Check out their site: http://www.schoolforimprov.org
  • Did some searching on the boards and there is some old information out there that is still valid, but was wondering if there are any new places to check out some jazz. Especially on Friday nights, like this Friday night...say you promised a friend you'd take him out to hear some live music on his birthday and you didn't realize it was coming up so soon and you have no idea where to go, only that it should be in Brooklyn and be a nice, laid back type of place. Any suggestions? Not that I'm starting to panic or anything....

For his birthday, jazz in Brooklyn is just not going to cut it. You take him to the Village Vanguard in Manhattan this Monday to hear the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, or you go to Smalls on Tuesday to hear Grant Stewart's quartet.

  • Turtle, I think Aji is having jazz NEXT Friday........ I guess that's not helpful, but maybe this week they are having belly dancers again this week?
Let us know where you end up!

Someone told me Two Boots has live music in the summer after all the kids leave.

Also, the Old Stone House sometimes has jazz!

  • Aji will be having Jazz NEXT Thursday and Friday Nites. i suspect Piero will be on the Board to give details.

The last Once A Month Jazz Event at the Old Stone House happened last Friday Nite. The series of jazz concerts in this venue on the first Fri of each month will probably restart in in Fall.

Magnolia often has a jazz duet on Friday and Saturday nites. You could give them a call to see if they will have music this weekend.

  • Just a word or two about Barbes. On one level it makes me happy that this venue is so sucessful and really attracts some first class musicians.

However, the back room where the music happens has got to be one of the most uncomforatable rooms to showcase music. It is often overly crowded and airless and musty smelling (as the front bar tends to be as well). I have known many musicians friends to play Barbes and when I feel obligated to go see them it is a chore and not a pleasure. After each show the room is cleared out which is fine if you are there to see just one group or hear only one set but if you are up for an evening of drinking and hearing music all evening this is not the spot. the presentation is a "concert" performance so don't expect to chat with who you are with when the music is happening. You will get some nasty PS stares.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking that if I started at Aji, it wouldn't be a problem at all to swing by and check out Magnolia and/or Barbes since everything is sort of close by. And my friend has spent a lot of time in Lima so I would love to get his opinion on Piero's food as it compares to that one would find on the streets of Peru. This may work out. I guess it does pay to wait until the last minute to plan things!

  • Turtle.. I ran in to perro from Aji today. You are in luck for Friday night..there is live music and it sounds interesting.

"Local artist Edwin Vazquez. Edwin Vazquez is a singer/guitarist/composer/ artist born in Santurce Puerto Rico and raised in Park Slope. Edwin's musical style is a fusion of Rumba, Flamenco, Bolero and Bossanova, with a mixture of Jazz and R&B elements. His unique blend of original lyrics are sung in Spanish and English...."
Sounds interesting.. he plays at 9 pm.
