donations
I have 2 bags of clothes/shoes that I want to donate. I can't get to Salvation Army when they are open Iand it is a huge pain to take them over there) and last time I put the bags outside someone looked throught them and made a huge mess.
I have also called local churches and no one wants clothes.
Any ideas??

there's now a clothing drop box on the west side of 4th avenue -- I think at the corner of 7th or 8th.

before you drop your clothes in a dropoff box, make sure it's a real charity. google 'usagain' if you don't know what I'm talking about.

If there is any work type clothes I would recommend giving them to dress for success a company that helps women re-entering the work force with clothes for interviews and office work.

Sadly, that box is gone. My wife and I asked someone at the bodega on the corner and they said it was taken away recently. They recommended the Salvation Army on 5th Ave and 15th St, but after hiking up there we learned that it's also gone.

A couple of years ago I struck up a conversation with the Salvation Army person that mans the holiday giving station (the ones that used to be done by guys dressed up as Santa with the red bucket and the bell ringing) near my train station at the city. She mans the same block every Christmas so I always say hello when I pass her during the holidays. She told me last week that not only do they take money, but she will also accept clothes donations on certain days.
In your travels if you see any of the bell ringers that are convenient for you, you may want to inquire if they are accepting clothing as well. Its a pain to schlep the stuff on the train, but I have some things I really need to get out of my house so I'm bringing a bag every day just to get this stuff out of here. -
I just saw a drop box on the corner of 4th avenue and 18 street

are any of those drop boxes *not* shady?
here's an earlier thread with a ton of options for clothes donations
