Mr. Softee
I always feel mean and curmudgeonly when I complain about this, esp. since it was one of Bloomberg's cause celebres last year, but the worst thing about Outdoor Loudness Season is those damn Mr. Softee trucks that rattle through the neighborhood at all hours. I can never get that damn song out of my head.

Sorry Amy - I have to disagree on that one - no matter when I hear that it just brings me back to my childhood - mmmm making me want a vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles

I have never heard it later than 10.
Stacey -
Subject: Id disagree too
I completly agree, plus its great for the kids. Without it, you'd lose a great part of living in Brooklyn! -
I heard it as of two nights ago, and it struck dread and fear in my heart.
It makes me crawl the wall. -
I love to hear it and to whistle it.
-
I like to hear it in passing. I can't stand when it parks its ass in front of my apartment for hours on end, I start feeling like I'm in caught in some sort of Lovecraftian universe of which I shall never return.
-
QUIT BITCHING. IF U DON'T LIKE IT GET OUT OF BROOKLYN. WE DONT WANT PEOPLE LIKE YOU HERE ANYWAY
-
hey, was that mr softee who just posted?

does anybody know whatever ebcame of the ice cream truck song ban that bloomberg was pushing last year? i guess it didn't pass considering how much i've already heard them around the neighborhood. and what about the car alarm ban? -
>WE DONT WANT PEOPLE LIKE YOU HERE ANYWAY
Thanks for the construtive dialogue. Who is "we"? Can you be more specific? -
We means BROOKLYN people. People that grew up loving the smell, culture, and the noises of big city living. If you dont like it LEAVE. Don't ruin Brooklyn.[/i]
-
I'm sure that as long as there has been a softee ice cream truck there have been people that did'nt love it. Even in brooklyn,
-
I dont think you can talk for me Guest - having been born and raised here (like Isa a 3rd generation Brooklynite) not only do I enjoy the different cultures, sights and sounds I also enjoy the different opinions people bring to Brooklyn. Without different opinions how can dialogue get started?
-
Who knew ice cream could be so controversial!
Anyway, Guest, I'm sure there are even a few things even YOU don't like about Brooklyn from time to time (like yuppies, perhaps? or people you blindly label yuppies even though you don't know them?), and because we all live in a kinda free country after all, of which Brooklyn is but one small part, we should all feel lucky to have a venue to express ourselves on when the mr. softee truck music is repeating in our heads and driving us crazy.... and thank you dailyheights for giving us such a venue! -
I heard the truck blaring the song in front of my shop today, and ran right out for a vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles. HAHA. That song has made my mouth water my whole life, Deal with it!

Subject: The Great Mistake
If Stacy and Isa are indeed third Generation Brooklynite, I see the way of thinking hasn’t improved through your blood line. Your great Grandparents were probably one of the sophists spewing their rhetoric that voted to make Brooklyn a borough of New York. Please give it up sister; we’ve been hearing your crap for too long, you and your ilk are the problem Brooklyn is turning into what it is today. Your parents were probably the ones yelling at us kids to play in front of our own house, and not to play stick ball in the streets. Yes sister, I know your kind. Today it's ice cream, tomorrow it's something else, constantly changing the true character of our neighborhood, and borough.

My mom ROCKED the neighborhood. I grew up in the projects actually and our apartment was the most awesome place that all the kids hung out at. My mom took everyone for ice cream and almost single handedly kept the neighborhood safe. Everyone knew her and respected her for her kindness and also feared her because she would kick anyone's ass who fucked with us. I know I shouldn't be upset by something a stranger posts on the internet but I can't deal with anyone talking about my mom, or making totally insane assumptions. My grandfather was a cab driver for 35 years, and he kicked ass too. My dad is an ex-cabbie current subway musician. My grandma worked at a synogogue. Whoever you are, you are a stranger with a fake name and obviously have an axe to grind over the internet. Leave my mom the fuck out of it. And further more, stacey said she liked the truck, so leave her the fuck out of it, too!

I really regret posting this Mr. Softee rant now. That such an innocent complaint would cause so much rancor and upset is unfortunate. If I make it to the Happy Hour I'm buying everyone a round (and an ice cream, too). (Except for that mean jackass guy who keeps judging everyone. I'm ordering him some coal for his stocking).
-
I went to see Garrison Keillor broadcasting A Prairie Home Companion at the Town Hall theater a few weeks ago and his sound effects man whistled a lovely, faraway, melancholic rendition of the Mr Softee song. It made the crowd go wild! (well, wild in that NPR way)

Well I really regret going internet crazy at 2 am. From now on I'm only going to post on message boards during the day, when I am level headed.
Voice over: And they all learned something that day... -
Thanks Isa - you go girl!!! (giving her a hi-five)
And a hi-five for you amyg for giving your opinion and sticking to it I enjoy your posts. -

Criminal minded - you are an ass. As yet another third generation Brooklynite, I would like to point out that our Borough has always been about change. Are you equally rabid in your opposition to the wave of Carribean immigration that has totally changed the face of Brooklyn over this past generation? Change makes us stronger. I don't have any particularly strong feelings about the Mister Softee truck, but give me a break. I bet you're not even from Brooklyn. You're probably from Long Island.

Carnivore --Of course I’m not in any opposition to the Caribbean Community, they have contributed allot the soup, in our "melting pot" community. What has gotten me pissed is that since the birth of Brooklyn, each generation has added to the pot, constantly adding ingredients, to make the soup tastier for their children. But you can not deny, this generation is not adding to the soup, they are switching it to Quiche. If you don’t think so your blind or ignorant. I do apologize to all that have been offended by my harsh comments, but I know I'm not the only one seeing what’s happening to our lovely borough. Were being pushed out financially, culturally (the dam ice cream truck example) all in the name of gentrification? It's like us Brooklynites are the Indians and the dam Hipsters are the Dutch. When is everyone going to WAKE UP and see what's happening? But I’m afraid it will be to late. These people didn’t want to step one foot into our community when the housing stock was plenty, and we suffered from the lack of city services. Now the housing Stock has dried up and NOW our community is worthy of them. BULLSHIT. In my eyes our community was great back then and still is now. But they want to change it to their liking, they want to change even the slogans of the neighborhoods, " Bedstuy do or die" to something else so it will be pleasing to the Hipsters. You'll see. I for one, will no longer site on the fence and watch the Hood Snatching of our community. So, If my strong opinions offend some people. Screw it; this is Brooklyn my friend, and I'll change for no one.

We really need to start checking the "Third Generation" papers around here. I find it hard to believe. Let’s scan the birth certificates of out great grand parents and post them. I got mine... If what everyone says what they say is true…. When the hell did Dutch Settlers (the Hippsters) even think of changing Prospect Heights name to ProHo??? Another example of changing things to their liking… Does anyone know where I can adopt and insurgent suicide boomer? I want to tell him there will be an infidel Happy hour at Soda Bar on thursday. hehe I know you hipsters can take a good joke, can't ya????
-
3rd generation means your 4 grandparents were born here, not your great-grandparents. Almost all my great grandparents were immigrants (mostly from Russia). Do you really have all 8 of your great-grandparents' birth certificates?
-
What's a suicide boomer - is that like a baby boomer?
By the way, everyone who comes to the happy hour has to sign a waiver that says the following: "I understand that the use of the term 'ProHo' is a joke. Furthermore, when using the term ProHo, I agree to qualify the statement by using finger quotes (similar to Dr. Evil saying 'Laser')." -
If you think the current racial/cultural community is "original" or the "first" to this neighborhood I have a great bridge to sell you. The tides change.
15 years ago no neighborhoods had good city services and crime was rampant, all this has ocurred from the overrall economy not becasue some white people have moved in.
Around 25 years ago, even Brooklyn heights was a gay neighborhood, far from what it is now. -
I don't think anyone is disagreeing that it sucks that people are being priced out of Brooklyn and Criminal, I don't think that you care about Brooklyn more than anyone else that posts here. Most of us are pissed off about the skyrocketing rents. I for one disagree with you that bitching about an ice cream truck is what is doing it. I love the sound of the truck in passing, I don't like when it is parked outside my window for hours on end because it makes me feel like I'm going crazy, the same way that when you hear carousel music in a horror movie lets you know that someone is about to get killed.
You were rude in assuming that anyone who had a different experience than you was somehow less of a Brooklynite. I for one like that ProHo is devoid of the Williamsburg aesthetic, I rarely see a "hipster" in the hood. The new places, like Soda and Sepia and Ripple, have "normal" people in them for the most part, and people that actually talk to each other, not people posturing and wearing that homeless chic look.
And get over the ProHo thing. When I lived in Sheepshead Bay I called it ShoBo for fuck sake, you don't see Vincent Gallo moving there though, do you? -
Criminal Minded wrote: When the hell did Dutch Settlers (the Hippsters) even think of changing Prospect Heights name to ProHo??? Another example of changing things to their liking… ?
I don't know, presumably some time before English settlers colonized the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam and renamed it New York. Or was it after Persia was renamed Iran? Or after Cher dropped her last name? I get confused. -
all ye hippsters, hear ye! hear! ye must dispense with your crude monnikers unbecoming of our faire city! we who hath beene here before ye know one and all that ever since your boat arrived herewith ye have attempted to besmirch the countryside with your evil and unfamiliar customs and practices. from this day forth, call ye not this land of our "ProHo", nor "Prospect Heights." As cited in our Towne Charter, this land of our (but not yours) shall only be known as Breuckelen! Out with all ye Hippsters and your evil witchcraft!
-
when i first moved here from boston, the mr softee truck nearly drove me out of my mind...it took about 2 years to finally appreciate its chirpy little song. now my pet birds have started to mimic its song (along with the truck that plays "pop goes the weasel"), so its a good thing i don't mind it now!
moral:
if you hate mr. softee, pet birds are a bad idea. -
Oh, what I'd give for all hours. Mine makes a high spped pass at 7pm and then is gone for the night. Damn.
Howdy, Stranger!
