there's a salvation army on flatbush and ... bergen maybe. and there's a goodwill between classon & franklin on fulton. those are probably a good bet. -
Sally's Army is not my thing -- anti-gay, and they sell most of the clothes donated to bundlers (I lived by Domseys' in Williamsburg when the workers there were trying to get decent treatment. oy.) who ship them off to third world nations to be sold by the pound.
NYC has a donation list with lots of phone #s and links at
http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/new_homes/new_homes.shtml
I gotta update my research for the non-Salvation Army donation possibilities . . . I brought clothes to a women's shelter in Crown Heights a couple years ago, fer instance. I *think* it was this one.
WOMEN IN NEED, INC.
Has many different programs and locations, helping homeless and low-income women and their children. One location which accepts donations is at 501 New York Avenue (Lefferts Ave.), which is near the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Call (718) 221-2770 for more information.
Housing Works

CHIPS (Christian Help in Park Slope) does a coat drive every year, and accepts other clothes, mostly mens I think.
200 Fourth Avenue (between Sackett and DeGraw) (718) 237-2962
Please call in advance to find out what kind of donations they accept for their clients there.ÂÂ
I've seen signs in the Slope for donations for Red Tent on 4th St. It's a women's project, I don't know much about them. But they have book and clothes sales to raise money. http://www.redtentwomensproject.org/ -
thanks guys! i'll do some research for the future, but i think my roomate just went to goodwill

The Catlick in me always donates my extras to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul - put some bags into the car and head to a parish house I know on LI.

I'm glad someone posted about this. I have about four shopping bags full of women's clothes I'm looking to donate too, however, it's not as easy as one would think. I work late during the week so I need a place that will either pick-up or take donations on the weekend. Also, I don't have a car, so I need somepace I can get to on foot. I sure wish there was a drop box in the area.
Also, sometimes I wonder if it's ridiculous to donate my clothes- I'm very petite, so everything has been hemmed for someone who's 4'10". Oh well, I guess someone out there could really use some child-sized business casual clothes. -
the B45 bus stops right across from Goodwill on Livingston. I had to take a bunch of clothes there myself. There is a drop box at the corner of washington and... Sterling(?) maybe... but for me, I need the receipt for itemizing taxes, so I need to take them someplace. The Goodwill on Livingston worked nicely with my politics and my commute.
But my GF also found a really great program that gives donations to underprivileged folks and they came and picked it all up in a truck. She donated tons of furniture, clothes, kitchen aids, etc. And they too give receipts. She just had to make an appointment with them. I'll find out their info and post it shortly. -
Great, I would appreciate the phone number and I'll see if the Goodwill is open on Saturday.

The NYC list has lots of contact info. Women's Business Attire is always popular, even the tiny ones I guess
Although those dress-for-success programs are always calling for big sizes too

There seems to be a new drop box on Bergen and Grand... I don't know how reliable it is, but I volunteered for a drop-box charity awhile back and we had pickups every three days.

Cupcake you should donate the business clothes to dress for success

There's also freecycle.org. Its a national craigslist-type mailing list where people post things they need or have to give away, and everything must be free. There's a pretty active Brooklyn chapter. Obviously you won't get a tax write-off, but at least your things are going to someone who wants/needs them.
