New Forum? — Brooklynian

New Forum?

edited November -1 in Site Issues
Would there be any interest in starting a new forum solely for local political/action issues. I love the Dead Possums and knowing where to get shoes fixed (if I had any nice ones) but I'd like to see some of the important issues not get watered down.

Like:
-All the Atlantic Yards stuff in one place
-Geting Roses planted in the Vale
-Discussing local polititians, last elections I only really knew about Owens and James
-I am concered/loving the growth of Vanderbuilt but would hate to see something like Cosi,Starbucks or Banna Republic move in.
-What can be done about street cleaning (I turned down a free beater cause I'd of had to move every day)
-Local safety/crime
-Outlawing Ice cream truck music
-What neighborhood associations exist and keep them/us informed

Maybe I should shut up and do my homework

  • Subject: Atlantic Yards website for community blogging

A new website dedicated to reporting and blogging on Atlantic Yards is in the works (coming out of www.GowanusWritingWorkshop.com). I will post info on it here in the next few days.
  • You mean a separate forum or reorganize this one? I think it would make more sense to have the "Front Page" (http://dailyheights.com/forums/index.php) here organized a differently--as it is, it's too simple to be useful. Instead of just two sections, there should be two HEADLINES with the sections under them.

    Instead of
MAIN FORUM (full of stuff you can't see) and
PARK SLOPE FORUM (full of stuff you can't see)
    it should be

    MAIN FORUM
    Politics and Activism
    Local Businesses
    Rumors
    Recommendations Needed
    Apartments
    Just for Fun
    Whatever
    PARK SLOPE
    Subject 1
    Subject 2
    etc.

You'd click on Politics and Activism and you could see a list of topics like you see here (http://dailyheights.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=2) now, but it would be more organized. It probably seems like overkill now, but the bigger this gets, the harder it's going to be to find stuff.

Also, it wouldn't necessarily make the forum take longer to read, because if you start on the Front Page, you can click on the newposts function (http://dailyheights.com/forums/search.php?search_id=newposts) to show you everything that's new since you last visited.
  • There really isn't enough traffic on the board to warrent new forums in my opinion. Changing the front page to have categories for the posts would be a good idea. Until we start hitting at least 30 or so new threads a day you will just end up with a bunch of barely active forums rather than one moderately trafficed one.
  • I agree that with the current level of activity, there's no reason to have a separate forum. It's certainly easy enough to see which topics are being discussed from the main forum.
  • Sorry , I did not mean new Forum, I meant new catagories. Like how Emily says. I seem to have misplaced my hair splitting device.

I have never exerienced the logout problem. Netscape 7.1 and Firefox 1.0 on my computerizzows
  • I love Emily's idea, but there is definitely NOT enough traffic to merit so much clicking around. And I would love to think everyone is as "leet" as Emily and would figure out the "posts since last visit" thing... but to tell you the truth, I had no idea that existed until you mentioned it. :)

Maybe there is a way to set up some BB system so you can have the option of looking at posts two ways: either (a) altogether like we have it now, or (b) by category, if you so desire. I would be willing to trash phpBB (exporting all your wonderful posts, of course) if we can find something that gives the user a choice.

Also, I really think we should do something like this on a wider scale for Brooklyn, with its own URL, like BrooklynBoard.com or something like that. This is covered, to an extent, with forums such as WiredNewYork and NerdNYC, but there isn't any good Brooklyn-wide, dailyheights-style forum that can cover the kind of ground that we do here. Or maybe you disagree?
  • There is digitalbrooklyn.com, but people don't seem to post on their forums so much. I think a couple of categories would make for more posting. But I'm just one guy talking.
  • Yes, I would describe it as "light traffic":

    Brooklyn

Nice concept, though. They just need to get the word out.

Omigod so tragic. I thought of posting there to get things started but I can't make that kind of online commitment. I've already got here, my journal and the nerds, I can't spread my online persona that thin.
  • That's why I'm inclined not to subdivide this tiny little board into many parts. When it comes to wasting time on the Internet, people are already overcommitted.
  • So this old suggestion has finally come to fruition! Who says Andy doesn't listen?

There's already a forum for that.
