Is she the one with the busy blond hair? I agree, she was a very accomodating bartender.

i went out to beast for a late night happy hour beer on monday evening...expecting a nice cold refreshing time away from the darn heat...unfortunately their AC wasn't working...BUT alas they had some great performers at their open mic. i normally don't dig those events but since only one room was air conditioned i had to endure and was very surprised!!!
definately going back monday...and yesterday i saw a huge crane hoisting an AC onto their roof...sweet! they said it'd be kicking over the weekend... -
went to beast last night... wife had the shrimp/peppers, which i cant vouch for, but the sauteed escarole i had, as well as the grilled veggies were really freaking good. it was like eating parsnip french fries.
after working all day, its nice to walk up the street and have a tasty bite to eat and a coupla beers.
i didnt like beast at first- bad first impression- but i think im sold now

I went to Beast once and probably won't be back. The menu looks good on paper but nothing we had was prepared well--paradoxically, dishes were both oversalted and flavorless. The ribs, for instance, had no discernable flavor despite being said to be braised in guiness. Odd. The music was also annoyingly loud. Service was super-friendly though.
Speaking of PH food, I second what someone said on another topic about Amorina: the worst pizza crust I've ever had! -
The Guiness-braised ribs have been panned by everyone from you to the New York Times (or was that New York Sun?). But I think the general verdict is that Beast "rocks." (disclaimer: have not been there)
-
not everyone has panned the ribs.

i love em'. they remind me of home...england. and the music rocks...unless you're not into indie rock, classic rock and oh in general rock. guess the joint is not for everyone...cause if it was then everyone would be there and that would be annoying. -
Last time I was at Beast they were playing New Order.

Subject: whats with brunch?
I saw a sign out today as i was walking past beast that they were serving brunch.Has anyone gone yet???Couldn't stop in because of the pups. -
Going in for brunch today. I can't wait!!! I saw a preview of the brunch menu and there's something for everyone. I know the food will be delicious, since everything I've had there in the past has been GREAT!!
....and I did check on the A/C issue. It's up and running!! -
A group of us went in for brunch on Saturday. Was it delicious. Since there were six of us, we opted to eat inside (thank goodness they finally got air conditioning)...though the weather was perfect to eat al fresco.
We had a variation of eggs Benedict...made with chorizo hash and a chipotle hollandaise; steak and eggs with potatoes...but this item had marinated skirt steak rather than the plain grilled variety (I understand the skirt steak is also a new addition to the dinner menu); and buckwheat pancakes with fresh blueberries and strawberries.
We also had two of the sausages featured...one was wild boar and the other chicken apple...and, of course, my husband had the Big B Burger...Great twists on old familiar favorites. It was totally outrageous!!
As if the food were not enough, the Bloody Mary was also a variation of the traditional...it's a family recipe, we were told. Outstanding!!!
Can't wait to go back. -
i also did brunch on saturday there! i had the grilled polenta, which seriously hit the spot. i also had the napoleon for dessert, OMG i LOVE the wine sauce, gorgeous! i am also in love with their mojitos, they could use a bit more mint, but still, they are outstanding. also, my boyfriend left his credit card there accidentally, and they totally recognized him and remembered his name when he went back to retrieve it hours later.

Beast, along with Total Wine Bar placed in the top 10 on Citysearch's "Best of 2005" in the small plates category. Sweet!!!

I went there for dinner there tonight for the first time, essentially due to the talk on the board.
Hey, guess what? I liked it. They have a pretty competant wine selection. I wasn't too thrilled with what I ordered for an entree, but it was good enough that I intend to go back for more.
However, I did take a bite of their burger and it was damn good. Anything crusted in pepper can't really be wrong in my book. Also, their pickles are the best I've had in years.
I think what I liked the most about the place, aside from the lighting, space between tables and earthtones was the fact that I think it's the first time I opened a wine list and found that I'd tried just about everything there and found it to be good/excellant. I was quite happy to see that. Not so with the dessert wine menu. There was one wine they carry that I found myself pouring the bottle out into the sink after a couple sips, but like so many things, that might be down to preference and the fact that I'm a self-proclaimed wine-nazi.
I just wish the name wasn't "Beast". -
i love beast its such a good place to bring a dog.

Really? We went there Friday. I find it ALMOST impossible to say a single thing bad about the place.
Wine recommendation was great, and we depend on recommendations, because we know nothing about wine. Burger was probably the best bar burger I've ever had (and that was the second time I've had it). Crab cakes were excellent. And they were exceedingly accommodating to our 1 1/2 year olds, unlike the baby-haters on that anti-breeder website, dailyheights.com.
OK... here's one negative comment. Sardines? Salty. Bleh. As a disclaimer, I can't get beyond my own tinned sardine experiences, particularly the traumatic college years when I couldn't afford much more than sardines or "potted meat food product." To be fair, putting sardines on the menu is a risk, so I applaud them for that.
Finally, the damage is really not that huge. It's maybe more than I would expect to spend at Geido, for example, but not that much more.
You mentioned the pickle - I commented on that, and the bartender told me that is house-made. Same with the ketchup. And the crack bread. The attention to detail at Beast is amazing. And I think the name is fine. -
Sardines, when used correctly, are awesome and not overpowering. Used incorrectly, yeah, they can be scarring. I had my fair share of bad memories and stayed away from them till I once had a salad at an Italian place that was filled with them. The saltiness and fishy taste offset everything else and it just worked. Since then I've been more adventurous with them, but yeah, you gotta be careful.
I wasn't too happy about the prices until I got the bill and realized it wasn't so bad really, considering the wine, entree and appetizer. Still, I think Geido's cheaper, but of course, a totally different ball game.
When I say I wasn't too happy about my entree, I mean that I got the short ribs and someone else got the burger. They ended up with this huge plate of food and I got a smallish bowl with some pieces of stewed meat and corn that cost about three bucks more. It was good, really, it was, but next time it's gonna be the burger. -

I know I tend to go off-thread on occasion, but I just wanted to note that most of the people you refer to as "baby-haters" (and yes, I know, some of them have referred to themselves as such) and "anti-breeders" (your sadly misbegotten term, I believe) are really neither "baby haters" nor "anti-breeders" (with one exception, of course, the member of this board --- who shall remain unnamed as far THIS post is concerned --- who proclaimed that he "eats" babies ... a bit gruesome, but that's a whole 'nother issue
).
The schism between "breeders" and "non-breeders" is really (IMHO) a function of the nature of living in the city and its cramped and overcrowded nature. The sidewalks are only SO wide, the stores have only SO MUCH room in which to maneuver. I think SOME (I repeat SOME) "breeders" feel that we "non-breeders" are required to step aside for them at all times. Or that we don't exist.
A recent example, and I'll shut up (even though I don't believe I've gotten my point across very well). The other day, I was in a small store making a purchase. I had for the most part completed my transaction and was getting change or signing a credit card receipt or whatever, and a woman came walked in the door with a double baby carriage (no offense DH). She was ENTIRELY unwilling to allow me to wrap up my purchase and get the out of there so as to allow her proceed freely and entirely unencumbered by my presence (and no, it wasn't raining, snowing or sleeting --- it was a lovely, temperate sunny day). Instead, the expression on her face was that I HAD to move NOW. The only place for me to go was all the way down a very narrow aisle and around to the back of the counter so that she could make her way in, in the process dropping my credit cards on the floor, spilling a bag of groceries, etc. No apologies from her of course.
Her absolute unwillingness to just hold on and wait the briefest of moments to allow me to finish my purchase indicated to me that she felt she was in some way entitled to push people aside as a function of her "breeder" status.
One anecdote of many.
