Slope Hair Salon?

Hello-

Does anyone know of a good hair salon in Park Slope? Somewhere reasonably priced for a cut and highlight? (If such a thing exists) I usually go to one of the beauty schools (Carsten or Aveda Institute) but I need to get my hair done soon and I don't have 6 hours to sit while a student does my hair (seriously it's a day committment)

Any recommendations?

I LOVE salon bohemia on 15th and 7th ave.

$37 for a haircut (ask for junior stylist-- though in no way do they seem like "junior" stylists). Each time I have been there I have a different person and they all do a fabulous job, and spend at least an HOUR with me perfecting every cut. I love the shampoo they use as well.

Le Chandelier on 5th (near Carroll, I think, basically across from the Ozzie's up there). It's about the same price as Salon Bohemia.

Natasha at Medusa (around 7th Ave & 1st St) is really great. She actually listens to what you want! She's reasonable. I think her cuts are about $40. I don't know how much highlights are.

My roommate has been to another stylist at Medusa (Sarah?) and lover her cut.

I am still bitter about The Worst Haircut Ever from the owner of Le Chandelier. I had shoulder length hair when I walked in, and after requesting a "trim" I could no longer tuck my hair behind my ears. :evil:

Pamona on 7th Ave. Lori (the owner) cuts well. I've never had her do my color, but she can. I sent a few people on this board there and they came back saying they were happy. Reasonably priced, too

I don't mind going to a barber (I used to go to a barber in Manhattan, Columbus Circle near the subway entrance), but not all of them do woman's hair even if the haircut is the same....
Maybe someone can recommend a barber in the Slope?

I go to Astor Place. If you can get there on Thursdays ask for Lucia, she is the only one I know. I have had my hair cut there since she shortened her hours and have not had any problems. I have shoulder length curly hair (Ima girl) and they do an adequate job for 16 bucks!

hmm, I'm going to jump in here and ask if any of these recommended stylists/salons excel with shoulder length to long hair and can do a very precise cut.

i would pay $40 just to sit and look at Natasha. I'm considering growing my hair out in order to justify having it cut somewhere other than the Park Slope Barber Shop.

Call bumble&bumble to hair model. If your schedule is flexible and you can spare two hours. It's free--you just tip the stylist, and they're always looking for people with short hair. If they like you they'll offer to do color, too. I see the number in some ad in the voice almost every week...

B&B does almost exclusively if not all razor cuts. If your hair doesn't respond well to this type of approach (can result in more split ends, raggedy-looking hair), then I don't recommend them.

Double Diamond--

I have shoulder length hair and I get it cut about two or three times a year by Cynthia at Eiji Salon on Madison. Cynthia was a protege of the late John Sahag and so she cuts hair very, very precisely. Hair cuts take 1 1/2 hours but they last for months. If you are short on cash, try to get a free Wednesday evening appointment with one of the assistants. Gisette is an assistant who does very nice work.

I recommend Salon Bohemia also!!! I am going there next week. They are really friendly and do a great job.

Vespa Salon on 7th Ave off of 15th St. Sergio and Sholmy are great. Elaine does good highlights, from what I hear. Normally you can walk in on an off day.

I got my hair cut today and my stylist reminded me that it had been four months since I'd seen her! Before I started working with Cynthia, I tried so many of the Park Slope salons in hope of not having to travel to Manhattan (my work schedule is unpredictable, to say the least) and I've finally figured that a trip to Eiji Salon to see Cynthia whose work is so precise that it lasts for months is actually time (and money) well invested.

On a related note, does anyone know of a nail tech in PS who can do an excellent buff pedicure? Pedicures are a monthly fixture in my life during the summers, so it isn't like traveling uptown three times a year for one of Cynthia's lasting cuts. It seems that summer is just around the corner and I don't want my feet to contribute to urban blight!

Faz Salon, on 5th St and 5th Ave. Ask for Rudy. I used to go to Medusa, and I have never looked back since I found Faz Salon. Absolutely the best! The Salon is relatively new so not a lot of people have heard it. A haircut costs about $40 to $50, I think.

my honey has long hair and he got a cut at Vespa salon....despite his instructions for a trim he emerged practically shorn! so i'd watch out for men's haircuts there.

Patrick at Frederick Fekkai. It's a long train ride and it costs a fortune, but he'll do a free bang/fringe trim in between real cuts. I go for a real appointment every 4 months and have the fringe trimmed every 5 wks in between. That way I get an exceptional high end cut for a 1/3 the price. You don't need an appt for a bang trim and it's shocking how much better it looks in 5-10 minutes. I do tip well though even for the freebies.

I used to go to Joann at le chandelier and she's ok too.

Hi Uxorka,

I've been really busy lately and so I haven't been checking in around here. Cynthia Varon can be reached at 212 838-3454. I think that her work days are Tuesday through Saturday. I got to her about fifteen years ago after an experience at a famous salon made most of my long hair start breaking off at the root. Cynthia is a genius. She cut my hair and showed me a way to make it look good while it grew back in. She's really nice and, if you were to set up a time to meet her, would probably provide a consult gratis. Just remember that if you decide to work with her, you'll need to schedule 90 minutes for your hair cut. She is very, very precise in her work and, at least for me, the long stint in her chair is a small price to pay for a cut that lasts unbelievably long.

^On the pedi note, not to derail but-
I stubbed my toe last night and cracked my big toenail pretty badly- can a pedi help fix this? Can they glue it back toether or something? It's going to look absolutely terrible if it rips all the way off. I've never gotten a pedi before so I don't know how this works but I would assume they could do something for it...right?

Subject: OUCH

I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I tripped over a cobblestone in London and also ended up with a broken toe nail. I tried to repair the situation myself but ended up causing an excruciating infection. Fortunately, there was a physician around the corner from my friends' house (about as far as I could bear to walk) and she was able to help me with antibiotics. If I were you, I would put a bandaid around my toe to be sure that the nail didn't tear.

An excellent pedicurist might be able to help with the temporary aesthetics. If you are willing to travel to Manhattan, Ji Baek of the Rescue Beauty Lounge is fabulous.
