Red Horse Cafe

I would just like to throw out how great the Red Horse Cafe is on 6th ave in south slope. The people are friendly, the coffee is good, and there is always a place for you to sit. I actually just found it recently...is it new?

  • I recently discovered this place as well. However, I am not happy about the 75 cent surcharge I recieve for making my coffee iced and with soymilk. The owner gave me a snippy look when I asked why my coffee was so expensive. I'll continue to go there, but not as frequently as I had been.

    Perhaps I'll see you there!
  • i one time i went in, it smelled horribly of chemicals. i haven't been back since.
  • They use frozen coffee as their ice cubes in the iced coffee. genius.
  • Not in my coffee!!! I paid a quarter for a measly little scoop of ice out of a bag.

Hmm...that's unusual. I'm guessing they ran out at the time. Sorry you had such a bad experience--I love the place.
  • Now dont' get me wrong - I like the place, and I will continue to go there. But paying for ice is like paying for paper clips or staples in your documents. It's simply a cost of doing business that the business should figure into their bottom line - not a ploy to get rich off of their customers.
  • Their coffee is amazing. I make my coffee strong at home but theirs has this eye-opening quality that keeps me going back. The oatmeal cookies and choc chip are very good too.

Were the ice cubes frozen bottled water or tap water?

Is it legal for a business to charge someone for tap water froszen or not?
  • no - the ice came from a bag like it was bought at a store.

However, i went in today and had an iced drink. the barista did not charge me for ice. it was the owner who did last week.

I too have been happy with this new addtion to sixth ave. I have been
going there every morning around 7AM to get a Cafe au lait for my
subway commute. The people who work there are pleasant and accomodating and the coffee is very good.
  • 6th ave and what?

Sixth Ave and 12th Street - directly across the street from
    Magnolia's
  • someone should tell them that the reason gorilla gets so much traffic is b/c they don't charge extra for soymilk. i know it sounds crazy, but lots of people i know go there for that reason, it's nice.
  • Brilliant!! Finally someone has caught on to reality that making coffee the way you want it shouldn't cost extra.

We just moved to that part of the neighborhood and went their twice. Both times a kid was working their and he was so listless and almost depressed that my wife and I both said we wouldn't be back. We went to the Patisserie this morning and the two woemn behind the counter were all smiles. It's key, owners. Get friendly people, even if they are pretending, to staff your stores. You don't need surly, especially to start the day.....

Just as a counterpoint... I have become a big fan of Red Horse (and their morning guy has always been super-friendly), but my friend and I thought we'd mix it up the other day and try Colson Patisserie. I really wanted to like this place - their pastries are fantastic, and their counterstaff were, as you say, all smiles. But the coffee was some of the WORST I've ever paid for, and the whole time we were sitting there, FLIES kept buzzing around us. My friend finally smashed two of them in the act of copulation ON OUR TABLE. And the woman behind the counter just kept on smiling...

Conclusion? Colson for pastries only, take-out only. I'll keep comfy, friendly, delicious, relatively un-crowded Red Horse Cafe for all my other coffee-shop needs.

Hey chef lady, your on a bit of a high horse with your whole iced issues. If you will pay any sort of attention to the difference between The Red Horse Cafe's(as well as any other cafe) hot and iced cups, you will find that they are considerably larger. Therefore you are getting more drink for the buck. That's why it cost more. Besides, it's also a $0.25 increase for the ice in the larger cup. If they would actually do the math for the increase, they're probably losing money. Especially since they're iced coffee's(not espresso drinks) are made with frozen coffee cubes.

I think that when they make the iced drink, they only steam a little of milk to pour at the top of the drink, which means that there is a lot more milk on an iced drink that in a hot drink, where all the milk has been steamed. We all know that milk increases its volume when steamed, so you need less milk to fill up the cup. I've been getting their iced cappuccino every day and I noticed that a medium iced is made on a larger cup that a medium hot drink. So, an iced drink is made on a larger cup than a hot drink and needs more milk since it is not steamed. What I'm trying to say is that you are wrong if you think that they are charging you for the ice. You are getting a bigger drink, with more milk!
  • It says on the menu "ice, $0.25"
    "witty banter, free"

seems as if I've stepped in the red horse cafe fan club!
  • Isn't it common for cafes to charge more for iced drinks? I'm a cheapskate so I don't buy coffee out more than a few times a month, but I could swear that, when I get an iced coffee in the summer, it costs more than a regular coffee.

Also agree about Colson's: great pastry, coffee blows.
