Anyone watch the marathon? — Brooklynian

Anyone watch the marathon?

I did, for 26.2 miles, and I have to say when I got to 4th ave and 9th street the Brooklyn fans were going wild. The slope and up to/just past BAM was one of the greatest parts of it for me. Thanks to everyone cheering and yelling go Dave or go Brooklyn (I was in my Brooklyn Road Runners Jersey). Your shouts of encouragement made my day!
3:32.

  • Didn't watch it at all, but congratulations!
  • wow, awesome you! congratulations!
    :D

this is the first year in many that I haven't gone down to the route, then dashed home to watch the finish on tv . . . working, phooey.

I love the wide overhead shot of all the runners jamming on the bridge from SI . . . the math of humanity . . .
  • Congrats! Just to let you know I'm getting the X-Box360 Bill Rodgers approved Extreme NYC Marathon Run. Unlike the real one though the game provides obstacles such as strong headwinds, un-leashed dogs jumping in front of you, steroid spiked Gatorade and opponents who take the A-train to W-74th Street and jump the finish line. I'll let you know how I make out.

Hey! The A Train doesn't stop between 59th and 125th! I do remember when that lady got caught taking the train though (like 1979/1980 or something, right?).

You've got the date right (1980), but wrong marathon. The infamous Rosie Ruiz skipped portions of the Boston course by taking the "T".

I thought she only qualified for the Boston marathon by cheating in NYC first.

My bad! Which is embarrassing because I used to take the CC, C or AA to W. 72nd St after I got off the D or A train at Columbus Circle when I was attending a nearby high school om w.74t back in the early, early '80's.

No, there was definately some chick who took the A or IRT a few blocks, or even a few miles from the finish. I thought it was in the '90's. I shall go to Google and report back.
  • I guess it was Ruiz. She was stripped by bith NYC and Boston marathon officials and had quite an interesting life afterwards. Time flies I guess.

  • Dave had drinks/dinner & a nap before I finished.

  • I split off the Magic Garden tangent to the Brooklyn and Beyond board.

I still think it's hilarious that they have to chip the damn runners to make sure they don't do this.
  • Are you serious? That's pretty insane.
  • i watched in bburg, right near my studio. all the cheering from rooftops was great.

and where's steve? and what was his time?
  • Thanks for asking BP. I unfortunately had some sort of nastiness with me knee and had to drop out at mile 19. It happens, I doubt it's anything that serious, but there was no benefit in pushing it any further at that point.

Dave, 3:32 is an amazing accomplishment, especially in New York, especially for a virgin marathoner. You should really be proud of yourself. I am in particular awe of you. Kudos.

They actually chip runners at almost every race these days, from 5K to marathon or Ultra. It's not to make sure they don't cheat, but to make sure their times are recorded properly. With the "ChampionChip" your potential several-minutes-to-starting-line don't count against you. Your race starts when you cross the line, not when the cannons go off. But, the chips do help keep track of where you are on the course so it's harder to cheat. They also have several video cameras along the way and photographers to verify where you were, but that's mainly only a concern for the elite runners who have a seperate start anyway.

As for Rosie, she cheated in the Boston maraton by taking the train. She did not finish NYC, but quit early on and went to an aid station, they took her to the finish but did not mark her as DNF so it appeared she finished fast enough to qualify for Boston. She only cheated in NYC by not telling anyone she dropped out. The mistake was on NYC and her dishonesty. She did cheat intentionally in boston though. Finishing as the first female, hardly sweating despite her thunder thighs and non-marathon-svelt bod. NYC realized she droppped out and removed her from the finisher list, shortly after that Boston realized she cheated and stripped her of her title. Rosie Ruiz is a Doushe bag with a capital D.

Thanks! I've been running a really long time, but this was my first marathon and I feel pretty damn good about it! One day I hope to qualify for boston, but for now, I'm looking forward to some rest!

    Sorry about your knee!
  • hearty congrats to KD + Steve + Quig for running in the marathon

    Thanks Dave. Again, well done.
  • Did you happen to notice a band playing at Mile 12 in Greenpoint? That was me! I commend every last runner, we watched 'em all go by and tried our best to give them some rock-it fuel. Its a kind of marathon show for us too, only difference is that every now and then we can dip into the Polish sports club for a shot.
  • I saw you guys shank bone. Thanks!
  • Our pleasure. We've played that corner for 3 years in a row. Do you have a sense of how frequently along the course they have bands playing? Every how many miles?

  • Honestly, I'm kind of into my mp3 player, so I don't pay that much attention. I just happen to remember that area because it's a little less crowded. There may be a dozen official and not so official bands along the way? Dave what do you think?
