fridge repair

anyone have any experience with someone who's good and reasonable?

the manufacturer was happy to charge an arm and a leg to send someone out in two weeks. i'm hoping there are better options.

and, at the risk of sounding ungrateful, please don't reply saying "have you tried the appliance repair shop at. . . ?" i can use the yellow pages and know how to google. i'd really like a reference that someone has used and liked.

thanks.

  • ok, no help from anybody here, thank you.

so i found someone online, had good customer ratings on yahoo, and called.

this guy was fast (came the next day, while the manufacturer's authorized local repair people were going to come next week), fixed the fridge in about 5 minutes, and cost less than half of what the authorized repair people were going to charge.

so if anyone else needs an appliance repaired (his card says he does ovens, washers, dryers, a/c, etc.), i'd highly recommend him. NO--SEE EDIT BELOW

DO NOT USE: super appliance repair: 718-854-5721

    EDITED 12/14:
I'm sorry but I cannot recommend this guy. It turns out what he did never fixed the fridge and in fact he may have done some damage to it because he didn't know what he was doing. This according to another repair guy I had to bring in to try to fix it again. While I don't know enough about the technical side to know who's right or not, I can say for sure the fridge was not fixed, is still not working properly, and Super has not returned my calls recently.
  • Thanks for the follow up info.
  • Just curious, what did it cost? And how old is your fridge?

I would have figured it was cheaper to get a new fridge (but then, I am space-limited to a smallish fridge). Consumer Reports has a report somewhere that tells you what appliances are worth fixing with respect to their age. I usually look at that first and then decide whether to fix.
  • bought the fridge in 99. cost $75 to repair. had the problem been more extensive, i might have considered buying a new one.
  • Certainly worth it if you get a few more years out of it.
