Typical Length before asking landlord for paint job — Brooklynian

Typical Length before asking landlord for paint job

I've been living in this aprtment since Jan of '04. Can I ask the landlord to repaint the walls or am I responsible for that?

    are you rent stabilized?

    if not, read your lease.
  • Three years. In typical fashion, it took my guy 8
  • Did they paint it when you moved in? I think if that's the case, its all they're responsible for, but let me go look...

    Found it:

"What are the rules for painting apartments?

The New York City Housing Maintenance Code requires that: In occupied dwelling units in a multiple dwelling, the owner shall:

Paint or cover the walls and ceilings with wallpaper or other acceptable wall covering; and
Repaint or re-cover the walls and ceilings with wallpaper or other acceptable wall covering every three years, and more often when required by contract or other provisions of law. "

So I guess you get a paint job next year.
  • Caaykho,

Thanks. I'm due in 07' then.
  • Maybe ask if you do it yourself, they'll cover costs of paint.

I always ended up DIY. Damn slumlords.

    You're Velcome.

I did mine myself, as well. I can't stand white walls! Plus, not all landlords have heard of a dropcloth. I've seen really expensive furniture irreparably damaged.

Sometimes if you want a different color, you can get them to do it if you buy the paint color you want (kind of the opposite of the suggestion above- their labor, your paint instead of vice versa).
  • i thought it was every two years.
