Myrtle Avenue New Constructions? — Brooklynian

Myrtle Avenue New Constructions?

So I noticed that the KFC next to the Pratt Post Office was recently knocked down, after being abandoned for a couple of years, and a lot of construction activity is going on.

Anyone know what's going up in that space?

I've also noticed that the old Brother's Hardware store is now boarded up and construction in that spot is now hot and heavy.

Anyone have any idea of what's being built?

Rumor has it that this is a pratt Institute expansion. I think classrooms and dorm.
  • That would suck.
  • why would that suck? I'm always wondering why we don't have a bigger sense of the presence of art students in our midst...
  • I think it would suck because this is an opportunity for something needed and nice to open up on Myrtle Avenue rather than it being another Pratt building.

I think if the area started to offer more for residents, which includes the art students, then you would see a bigger art presence.

I disagree. I live about a block away and walk by that ugly abandoned lot almost every day. Anything is better than what they have now. I have no problems with Pratt expanding.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the services and amenities of the Myrtle/Pratt area. I'm also confident it's a very up-and-coming area and we will see better/more businesses moving in year after year.

I've noticed it to be true and I've only been here about 2 years.

On the contrary, I think more Pratt dorms would mean less Pratt students in the surrounding apartments, and the less Pratt students in the surrounding apartments means no more Pratt students running around on the roofs of the brownstones on Clinton Avenue, and no more students running around on my roof means no more leaky bathroom ceiling for me and no more people accidentally kicking our cable and phone hookups out of line.
  • The old hardware store is going to be a Bank of America. Sad, but true... Such a great space; had such potential!

There are a lot of empty store fronts on Myrtle between Hall & Vanderbilt... I wonder what's going in ALL of them. If anyone has any info, DO tell!
  • I thought that the old Adami place was going to be a Bank of America.

Does anyone know what is going to be built in the spot that was Court St Office supply's warehouse? Its next to the Armory building on Vanderbilt.
  • I'm pretty sure that the old Adami store is going to be a Bank of America.

The Court stationers warehouse is going to be apartments, I heard.
  • Re: lot on Clermont/Vanderbilt.
New condos. Really nice. Two concave shaped buildings with an inner courtyard that has a large swimming pool.

On the contrary -- that looks like it'd be very obtrusive and oversized for the neighborhood.

...and next time, if you want to cover the fact that you're the owner, you may want to take the extra step of registring.
  • Agreed, I think it looks out of place and garish.
  • Bank of America at the hardware spot? Really? I guess it's about time, Citibank's had a major stranglehold on that corner for ages. That hardware store was big and great to have around for so long. Bittersweet to see it disappear.

Any word on what's happening with the bodega space on Myrtle and Washington (across from Kum Kau)? The store was wrecked in a fire some time ago, I thought the owners would rebuild but maybe not...?
  • Yeah, that glassy building on Vanderbilt really seems like it will be out of place. Speaking of out of place, what is the building that is next to the SJU parking lot on Vanderbilt that looks like its covered in high quality tar paper? I thought it was going to be some sort of gallery or studio.

OK, the mists of my memory are clearing and I think I remember now: Brothers Hardware (which I loved) was taken over by the seafood place (which I also love) which moved from what is now the Subway (and was a great Italian place for about a minute. Gabriela's?).

Have things always changed this fast? In my small hometown upstate I remember that shops closed and reopened all the time when I was a kid, but here I guess that there is such a concentration of businesses, it seems like it has accelerated.
  • I think Gabriela's is still in business (it was 3 weeks ago). Gabriela's is on Vanderbilt and Willoughby, Subway's is on Vanderbilt and Myrtle, a block further down.
  • O.K.

    1. The place that was Gabriela's (and I'm not sure that was the name....something with a C, maybe?) had a fire and is now the Subway's at Myrtle and Vanderbilt.

    2. There's no businesses at Myrtle & Willoughby, only residences and a church.

    3. The weird bldg. next to the SJU parking lot is apartments or condos or something. Very strange. 2 buttons on the buzzer board. Zero windows on the big giant side facing the parking lot. Windows on the front seem to be onto a staircase. I'd love to get a look in there. (If you live there, can I get a tour? PM me)
  • Actually, that modern looking building next to the SJU parking lot is not residential. It is commercial space for interior designers or architects -- built by them. There was a short piece on it in the NYT Sunday magazine, around the first week in September.
  • I'm obviously in the minority here. Don't think the new building on Vanderbilt/Clermont is obtrusive and oversized, especially when it's compared to the Armory next door.
FYI, I'm not the owner. Just will refrain next time from providing helpful information that someone requested since you're only reaction is to be sarcastic and snide.
  • Guest 12:37,

Don't hold back. I don't think they're so horrible either. The stuff across the street on Vanderbilt isn't exactly a quaint brownstone block (6-12 story apt. bldgs.), and what with going next to the Armory, it's not out of scale there either.

I don't think anything's particularly wrong with having some variety in the nabe when it's not ruining some existing treasure. The warehouse that was there certainly wasn't a landmark to be preserved.

I don't think Adami is disappearing. My understanding is that they were moving into a smaller space across the street and then planned to expand to the property next door once that tenant's lease was up. I remember seeing them in the smaller space, but no idea whether the planned expansion is still on the table or not.
  • Some of the people who used to work for Adami bought out their Tru-Value franchise and did open up across the street. It's in two storefronts so far and I think he's waiting for a third to be available to expand into.

I've gone there a few times and found myself laughing at how many of the things they didn't have that I had gone there to buy. Not the shopping experience that Adami was.

    1) There's an Italian place in the middle of Vanderbilt. Graziella's between DeKalb and Willoughby Avenue and it's still open. Not sure what was in the space before the Subway opened.

    2) Mrytle and Willoughby Avenue run parallel - they don't cross.
  • Sorry, I meant Vanderbilt & Willoughby...not Myrtle.

I've been to the new Adami a few times since it opened. It seems like pretty much the same old place to me. But then again I'm never buying anything terribly specialized or out of the ordinary. usually just contractor bags and tiki torch fuel. :)

    Guest, I appreciate your contribution.

However FYI: people tend to respond better when you have a log in name. Myself included. Too much dumb stuff gets posted by 'guests'

If you were genuinely trying to be helpful, then my apologies. However, this board tends to get people who "spam" by pretending to be a poster, and then just posting a link to another site and then disappearing. As Boygabriel said, actually taking the time to get a name would reassure many.
