Lowes Kitchens

My neighbors just redid their kitchen and got the cabinets at Lowes. The cabinets looked just fine. They installed them themselves.
I don't think they have the exeact same brands as HD
The designers anywhere you go are going to be hit and miss. When I went to HD the designer told me they wouldn't put the rnage next tothe wall, told me it was against building code. I called the buiuldings dept and they say nothing inthe code to prevent it if you tile the wall next to it, ie there can't be a cumbustable surface les than a foot away. A local person you could try is Debbie Getz http://closetsbydg.com/ or Aaron Gruenberg at Greenmountain Cconstruction http://gmcandd.com/ (I've no connection to either of these just know their work)
If you have a small kitchen 2 things to ccocnsider are getting european "frameless" cabinets instead of face frame cabinets. Those face frames can take up lots of drawer and pull-out space and you'll gain a couple of inches of room. Also think about getting custome or semi custom cabinets. For a small kitchen the cost is not going to be that much more and you can really maximize the space. the cabinets sold at Lowes and HD only come in standard sizes, usually 3" increments so you could gain several inches of cabinet space easy. -
I would go to Lowes before HD. There's no difference in the quality of cabinets between the two but in my opinion Lowes gives better customer service. You might also want to explore buying a range and other appliances at J&R on 7th Ave by President in Park Slope. If you have a specific appliance in mind , Ralph, the owner, can most likely get it for you. Whatever you do avoid places like EBA, Drimmer's and Sear's. They have great eye candy, however, when it comes to getting a problem solved, such as fixing an appliance they are all horrible. A s far as cabinets, go to Modern Kitchens. Call them at 718 439-6666. They have a showroom somewhere in lower Bay Ridge, I just forget where. They are very good and the prices are right.

I did a gut reno of my kitched and used HD for my cabinets because they carry Thomasville - I did not have them install them. I knew exactly what I wanted but the young lady at HD gave me a couple of good suggestions. But that was pretty much all I did with HD. As far as Thomasville I cannot say enough wonderful things about them. They called me when they received the order, gave me an order number I could track on line at their site and when they told me three weeks it was three weeks to the day. The delivery guys were great and not one cabinet was damaged in transit.
But as Idlewild said their cabinets are all standard sizes and if you are looking for something other than that you are definitely better off at a custom built place.
One piece of advice I will give you is that you shouldn't skimp too much on the cabinets - all the brands, Krafmaid, Thomasville, etc. will give you a choice of full wood or particle board (?) - go for the wood. And do NOT buy granite or other high end countertops from HD or Lowes - there are many other places who will give you the exact same product for much, much less.
Good luck! [/list] -
I like lowes styles better than hd.

I dont know anything about HD or Lowes but I did end up using Modern Kitchen and Baths b/c I wanted to avoid the incompetents at the big box store. Big mistake. Modern Kitchens was an absolute nightmare and ended up costing me months in delays. Their service is horrible once they have your money...and they were more than HD estimates. So I'd go to Lowes or HD before Modern Kitchens.
Ive also heard scary stories about Garfield Kitchens but I cant speak to those personally. -

I have to tell you that I am very shocked at hearing your experience about Modern Kitchens. I have had nothing but professional service with them. Then again I've had problems with things that other folks on this board recommended so who knows what is what.
