Crime Statistics

For those of you who don't know, the NYPD has a system call CompStat which tracks reported crime statistics citywide. Obviously there is some amount of unreported crime or crimes in which a report is not taken because of uncooperative or unwilling victims.

Year to date there have been 20 murders reported in the 77. For the year 2005 there were only 9 murders. That is 111% change. Rapes are up to 21 whereas there were 10 in 2005. So far burglaries are down but there have still been 217 reported burglaries.

Here is a link to the current 77 CompStat figures...

This link gives you more links to CompStat figures by pct and borough.

  • just a point of clarification re: rape

this figure includes rape where the parties are known to each other (ie: date rape and domestic violance)
the precinct is always quick to point out that these crimes are being reported at a much higher rate than in prior years (a good thing) and that this does not mean that rape as a street crime has gone up in the manner suggested by these stats

(tho i have no idea if it has gone up or down and perhaps i will try to get a sense of that at the next community council meeting)
