i am getting married next weekend (nov 25). i just bought a suit and need it tailored. i am interested in someone a little more knowledgable than your average "also owns a dry cleaning shop" kinda tailor. as this is my wedding suit, i want it to be perfect. i need a real artisan. anyone have any recommendations?

there are two real tailors on washington ave - one btwn st. johns and lincoln, one between st. johns and sterling. you may want to go by these tailors and see what they have to say about what you want done.

I know a good tailor in Manhattan: Campos & Campos on 14th street b/w 7th and 8th ave.
  • i had some work done at mi montuno on washington. he basically cut off the bottom of my jeans and used light blue thread to hem them. i think others have had good luck, but i won't go back. oh and he asked for a 50% deposit and gave the jeans and other alterations back in what looked like a used bag.

caree at park and vanderbilt hemmed another pair of jeans the same way.

from now on i'll take all my alterations to g+g cleaners at grand and 6th ave (is that still considered soho?). they've done great work for me... i only wish they were closer.

  • There's a genius tailor on the corner of 57th and 9th ave in the city...she's located right next to D'Agastino's...not cheap, but I've trusted her with several high end items. Mi Montuno made me a shirt...custom made. I love it.
  • I LOVE the tailor at Golden Touch on Flatbush next to Natural Land - he's much better than your average dry cleaner tailor. I've sent a bunch of people there for complicated or important things and they've all been pleased. A friend had her wedding dress done there, even. However, I've never had a men's suit done there, so I can't vouch for his abilities in that arena.

The best tailor I know in Manhattan is World Class on 9th St just east of 6th Ave, but they ain't cheap.
  • I have a vintage (i.e. old) wool sweater with leather patches on the shoulders and elbows. The patches on the shoulders have dried and are tearing away from the wool. I've had it stitched a few times, but the last time I took it in, the woman just gave up and put double-sided sticky tape underneath.

    I got the hint.

Is replacing the leather something any tailor can/will do, or do I have to go to some kind of leather specialist?
  • I use Bridge Cleaners downtown for all my dry cleaning and alterations.

Pen - they should be able to help with those patches. They do great work on leather and suede
