How do you manage this when there are cars parked bumper-to-bumper in the street next to the curb? I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm curious. There is a grouchy woman on my block who yells, "Walk your dog in the street!," to everyone walking past her house with a dog

Asking people to walk their dogs in the street is ridiculous...

Ridiculous, and dangerous. ...I never considered the logistics for everyone in Park Slope, but I have seen few blocks without a fire plug or driveway, or even a poorly parked car. That's more than enough space. ...My Dog No. 2 seems to prefer in-street, at-curb transactions. But she, and I, are not perfect. Moments after I posted my comment, I took her out and, as I was fumbling to find my cell phone was in, she was leaving a little yellow puddle smack dab in the middle of the sidewalk. She gave me a look, like, whatever. So, that one was on me. (Sorry, 17th Street.)

Sidewalk tree pits are not designated you-don't-have-to-pick-up-your-dogshit-here amnesty zones.
I agree in fact I dont think there is anywhere that it is ok to leave dogshit, however I think it is more than ok for my (male) dog to use said pit as a pee post - (female likes the street).

As for the vespas - I have virtually never seen one parked anywhere but on the curb and in fact I am okay with it (at least w/ current usage) and I dont let my dogs use it for piss.

Hey WIFI is a hydrant ok??? I mean the firemen have to touch them sometimes too?

It's not good for the plants, and not nice for the gardener.
  • Given the amount of santitation tickets I've gotten these days, garbage ain't what it used to be. That want that shit pristine when they pick it up--dirty or rat infested don't fly anymore. So dog piss definitely won't go over well---plus, imagine if there was a puddle of it on the bag that splashed on your clothes or shoes when you picked up the bag. That'd ruin anyone's day...
  • I've noticed a lot more dog crap on the sidewalk lately in PS. Come on people, I don't empty my cat box in front of your apartment, please don't empty your dog in front of my place. Bring a bag with you. How hard is that.

The pee puddles are gross too, and the smell lingers long after you walk back home. At least have them pee on the side of the sidewalk if you can't get them to a curb.

Also, I grew up with dogs, many dogs. I never had a problem getting them to the curb to pee. I've never seen a street so completely bumper to bumper that a dog could not sqeeze between some cars or get close to the curb.

Basically, I think it's just that some dog owners are lazy or they just don't give a shit if it's not their property.
Most dog owners seem to be pretty good about it, otherwise we'd see shit all over the place. But a few of the bad ones are giving the rest of you a bad name.

Also, for the person saying it's ok to pee on garbage bags. I think that's lame of you. I personally would not want to pick up pissed-on bags if I was a sanatiation worker. Shame on you for thinking that just because they haul garbage, they wouldn't mind a little dog piss.

Also, don't let your dog pee on someone's vespa or plants. If you do, you're an asshole. Plain and simple.
  • i wrote: can anyone suggest an outdoor odor killer (like they make for indoors to keep your pets off your furniture but stronger)?
Pet supply stores like Petco carry some urine cleaner that is pretty good. I had to purchase some when I moved into my house to clean the "doggy corner" of one room. It can be used indoors or out.
  • Sooooo glad people are speaking out about the disgusting habits of many (not all) dog walkers. I do not want to push my baby stroller or walk through dog urine or dog poop!
It is certainly not too much to ask to curb your pets.
If it is too much, I suggest moving to a farm, a far away farm.
  • Thank you Kosher Dave. I too am near PPW and the smell lingers and lingers, the inconsiderate folks are far more than the considerate ones. I am dying to catch the person(s) who let their dog piss on my bike. I have more puddles in the spoke wheel and I cover it and I still have pee marks splashed on the chrome. I keep saying if I see the person(s) who allows this to happen I'm going to_________________......help me fill in the blank.
  • Is it just me or are small dog owners the biggest offenders when it comes to leaving crap? Once I watched a woman let her (whatever tiny breed dog it was) run out the front door, take a shit in front of the neighbors house, and run back in. Just because the turds are little don't mean you don't have to pick them up.

Does anyone else remember the "performance artists" who, back in 1997, would go around the LES putting candy sprinkles on dog poo on the sidewalk. It was kind of funny and kind of brilliant (you noticed the sprinkles before the poo so you were less likely to sep in it).
  • Rose wrote: It's not good for the plants, and not nice for the gardener.
Agree. People would be more likely to plant flowers and tend treepits if they weren't being used as public toilets, and more flowers are always a good thing IMO.
  • I just wish the MEN in Brooklyn would stop peeing on the sidewalk. Oh, and in the lobby of my building. OK, not ALL men, but this seems to be a popular habit with more than a few of them. In broad daylight, middle of the day, whenever and wherever nature calls, basically.

they need public toilets. which nyc lacks as a whole.
  • What I would love to see are more of those little boxes where people can pick up a bag to clean up after their dog. They have one on the way into Mt Prospect Park. If every block had one or two of them attached to a street sign or a tree and everyone put their NYT bags or plastic grocery bags into it, there would be no "I forgot my bags" excuses. It's disgusting to have to dodge that every day and I hate that my kid goes to her grandma's house in the country and asks why there's no dog poop everywhere.

Also a side-note to dog owners: please do not get offended when I steer my stroller clear of you and your dog. Even friendly dogs can scare or hurt a little child when they jump up to say hi.

Women manage just fine. Sure, public bathrooms would be a good thing, but it's not an excuse.

I'd like to see the end of public spitting. Why do people have to spit on the ground (or even worse, on the floor)? I don't get it. The only time I need to spit is while I'm brushing my teeth. And a couple of times I've almost gotten nailed while walking down the street when some jerk passing me turned and spat.

this so reminds me of this sign my dad says was in the subways when he was little... "if you expect to rate don't expectorate!"
  • men in brooklyn?

I was on the way to a party last friday night with Candicissima and we walked by the tail end of the OUT 100 party. we saw a guy holding two grab bags blocking the view of his buddy taking a piss against the side of the building across from the event. nasty.

Don't tell me ladies wouldn't do that just as often if it were a little more convenient; I've seen them on occasion.
  • i seen girls standing up and peeing albeit a homeless girl lol.

cause girls do it too, not just us guys standing around peeing on tree's and buildings.

Those were no ladies, then, sir! :)

No way would I do that. Granted, I have a bladder of steel, but still.

Were those females that you've seen drunk, by any chance?
  • i'd like to know when it became ok for pet owners to let their pets piss and poop on someone else's property.

i'm serious, and i don't mean to be one of the supposed "dog bashers" because i love dogs. but it seems as though even a small complaint about dogs doing their business is met with tremendous hostility.

yes, dogs need to relieve themselves... on my fence, gate and garbage cans? (which i'll need to clean, btw.) in the middle of the sidewalk so the pee runs all over the place? and on a tree pit where it will either kill flowers a person has planted, or make the idea of turning the area into a garden seem disgusting because i wouldn't want to be digging my hands in dog waste.

sorry. your dog, your clean-up. i know it isn't easy because cars are parked tightly... well, that's not really my problem. i know there are "accidents", but if you know your pet is prone to them you can't travel with bags and paper towels? what gives anyone the right to pee on my stuff?
  • I spent some time living in France, and even though we have our dog poop problem in NYC, it doesn't compare to the one existing over there.

Even though there are signs instructing people to clean up after their dog, people RARELY do so. Walking down a Parisian street is like walking through a landmine.

They have some interesting solutions... the main one being that their sanitation workers come around on a BRIGHT green moped and suck up the poop in a vacuum extension attached to their bike. I was so intrigued when I saw this I took a photo. I'll have to dig it up and post it.

I also noticed a few "canisacs", which hold bags in order to encourage dog-owners to clean up. (how do you attach an image?)[/img]

Paper towels? You want dog owners to 'sop' up the urine???

BTW - you dont 'own' the tree pits and while I'll grant you it is rude to let your dog stomp over a nicely planted tree pit, I have yet to see a protected pit be 'killed' off simply by pee - maybe its the nitrogen but our tree pits bloom quite nicely - pee and all.

As for it being disgusting to garden - I think the pee is clean compared to the rats and other vermon that scamper from tree pit to tree pit when the sun goes down.

You don't "own" the tree pit, but property owners are responsible for the trash, etc in the pits in front of their yard. In this recent sanitation blitz I know someone who was ticketed for a dirty pit and cited on the ticket was excrement among other things.

Bottom line is, if your dog drops it, pick it up. If its too runny, wash it away. And always be conscious of the fact that you and your dog aren't the only ones who have to use the street.

well, if they pee on the sidewalk i do. yes. why should i have to walk through urine?

as for tree pits... please, humor me... why are they there with soil around them and a border. as a manicured place for your pet to pee?

it's really very simple: curb your dogs and clean up after them. the whole city is not your puppy-pad.

You don't "own" the tree pit, but if you own the building it's in front of, you're responsible for maintaining it (for example, you can be ticketed if there's litter on it). It's wrong to leave your dog waste there just as it's wrong to leave other litter. And if someone has taken the time, effort and expense to plant flowers there and make it look nice, it's a dick move to let your dog piss there.

If you don't think it's a big deal, you can always let your dog relieve itself in your own tree pit.
