Friends and Relatives who think Brooklyn is...
this undesirable place to live?
Let me give you a brief history...
-Brooklyn born to West Indian Parents
-Parents move out of Brooklyn during the late 70's "shifting phase" to racist, but intergrating Rosedale Queens.
-Go to Elementry, JHS and HS in Queens and part of my college years.
92 Got a job working for the city in Brooklyn. My first taste of Brooklyn since the family left.
-Watched over the years as Brooklyn changes. No longer "Do or Die" Bedstuy, now Gentrify Bed Stuy.
Brownsville is still called "Never Ran Never Will" but moves to ENY in 1997. Been there ever since.
As a city Bus Driver I go thru neighborhoods all over Brooklyn and I have watched places turn from blight and flight to Fight for the right price.
I have watched more privately owned homes go up in my neighborhood in the last 2 years that would make your head spin. Starett City is no longer Starett City, it is now "Spring Creek".
The boulders that literally seperated Howard Beach from East New York have been removed and replaced by asphalt and 2-3 family homes.
Now when my friends ask me all the time, "When you coming back to Queens?" I tell them "Why?"
There is nothing out there for me but a two fare zone and a false sense of "Quality of Life".
Do you guys finds yourself explaining to relatives and friends why you choose to stay in Brooklyn?
Also, there is no section here for Canarsie/East New York.

Nope. In fact whenever someone asks me where I'm from I say "Brooklyn". I have yet to hear a negative connotation or get a perplexed look about me living there.

When my wife and I travel outside of the City, around the country, etc. we ALWAYS meet someone who has lived in Brooklyn: born there, lived there, passed thru...pretty much always positive stories from folks we have met.
Back in the 1980's I used to get static from my folks and apprehension from non-NYers "isn't Brooklyn dangerous?"
But, that all seems to have changed. Better or worse?
Proud to be a Brooklynite! -
Wow! I finally came across a some comments that include ENY!
Just made an offer on a nice single Fam. My parents left Jamaica,Queens for the burbs in the early 70's...to an area that was in the throws of "white flight". Lived there all my life until moving to the Bronx near Coop City as a renter about 6 years ago. (Much to my families dismay!!) I guess that helped me open to ENY. The Bronx gets a bum rap too. But I must say my experience here has been quite nice. But we were looking to finally own and the commute to the city for work was wearing us down.
We missed a lot of the affordable opportunities in Bed-Stuy and decided to extend our search...and came across a gem that had wonderful owners. They've given the place TLC in the 14 years they've lived there. We can get to the shopping near Starrett (oops...Spring Creek), near two train lines. This is my first blog so I hope this isn't too long.
Howdy, Stranger!
