the Met on vanderbilt
im am so freakin done with that place.
im sick of the creepy family that owns it
there meat fish and produce suck.
they allmost never have the yogurt i want
allways out of 2% milk
i could go on.
from now on im just going to bite the bullet and go to the store on flatbush even though its more expensive.
blah!

wow, that's so the opposite of my met foods experience. (although we do get milk and produce from the farmers' market.)
sorry you've had a bad time. but wanted to put in a good word for others who see this post. -
Try the CTown on Washington that would make you love that Met Food...I know I do
-
i love met. but maybe i just don't know anybetter, because before that i lived by the shittiest ASSociated ever.
the guy in the met is always nice to me, and when i've mentioned they dont have things like, yogurt, or fresh thyme i think i wanted once, they go in the back and get it for me. the younger guy is a huge flirt, and im not always in the mood for that...
also, their frozen pizza section is lacking.
but its convenient, and im happy with it.
and i am looking forward to getting fresh direct in the dead of winter though! -
I like the Met on Vandy very much. it's true they don't order enough Erivan yogurt, as they're mostly out of it, but in general, I find it clean and good for basics. For the fancy stuff I haul myself to Union Market on 6th and Union.
I like the people who work there, they've been unfailingly friendly and remember me each time, even the cashiers and the deli people. Mr. Tips is correct, if you just walk into the CTown on Washington, you get nauseaus from the smell, it's disgusting, and makes you appreciate the Met that much more. -
The "younger" one totally creeps me out. He has said so many gross things, like how he cheats on his wife with young girls he meets in the store and the such. He also asked my husband how much he makes - I think he actually flirts with him too...
-
I don't have a clear preference between the Key Food and the Met, but I do really hate the fact that either of them will inevitably lack one ingredient you need for any recipe more ambitious than grilled cheese, necessitating a trip to the other.
I will say that I was in the Met once this summer when this dude totally flipped out over something really stupid (he was trying to order something from the deli that they don't offer) and started freaking out and yelling all sort of racist bullshit at the young woman who was at the deli counter that day, and I thought they handled it really well. At first somebody called the police but when the police arrived they'd sort of talked the guy off the ledge and even ended up selling him a sandwich and a drink. -
Yeah, the guy who's sole job seems to be "Met Flirter" can be a bit too much, though if a gal feels like taking advantage of his laciviousness, you can pretty much get him to do your shopping for you.
Oops, did I just set feminism back 20 years?
I love the fact that they have a sign in their window selling shopping carts. Has anyone ever *bought* a shopping cart? -
I assumed that those were granny carts. :?:
-
the smarmy grin and full body appraisal upon walking in is a bit off-putting, but the joint is 10x cleaner than anyplace on washington, so I put up with it. the key foods irritates me because it is so cramped and everything I want is either not available or on the top shelf.
-
i bought my granny cart there the very first shopping trip i made there when i moved to the hood! hasnt even broken down yet. and ive had it since july!

I hate the way the aisles at Key Food are angled away from you as you walk up the left side, so that it's hard to peek in and see if what you want is there, especially if it's crowded, too. And it's sometimes quite hard to find someone to help you get something off a high shelf. Some of their shelves are so high that really no one could reach them without a stool. It's too bad because I think I would really like that store better if they had a large space. -
I love the Met! It is impossible to find anything in Key Food and they are really expensive. The cashiers at the Met are alot friendlier as well. For some reason I never ever see anyone buying meat at the Key Food. Do they know something?
-
I prefer Met Food as well. Their selection is much better than Key Food.
Honestly, though, I get most of my groceries from Fresh Direct, and whatever I can from the GAP greenmarket (eggs, produce, fish, lard  , etc.). For meat, I usually either go to Whole Foods at Union Square, or occasionally to A&S Pork Store. For me, the local supermarket is really just to fill in the gaps when I need something that I can't get at the bodega.
I do wish that the deli counters at both places were better. I can never get them to slice cold cuts thin enough for me. Or sometimes I get the irregular slices that are really thick on one end and tapered off on the other end. When I'm motivated enough, I go over to Russo's in PS for cold cuts (or sometimes get them from Whole Foods). -
whole foods has this fantastic uncured ham. mmm. maybe I need to head to union square ....

Love the Met... with the exception of the owner's son who struts around not doing shit pronouncing genius quips like "Hitler was right... he had the right idea" and talking about how one day this will all be his.
-
Yeah, never been particularly for of him, either.
And while I do like the Met, anybody else have a problem getting bananas to last longer than 3 days? Geez, man - even if you buy green ones, they'll be ready for makin' banana bread the next day... someone needs to fire their banana gasser. -
are you talking about the fat one thats all dressed in hip hop clothes?
yah he is anoying. whenever i go in there hes either sitting on his ass or talking to one of the cashiers. and he tries to be all chummy with all the younger black kids that work there and you just know most of them are saying to them selves " get the fuck away from you corny fat basterd"
i only get 3 things from that place now
vitawater
stoufers frozen pizza
and dannon strawberry yougurt ( when they actually have it )
oh and bottled waterAlecorock wrote: Love the Met... with the exception of the owner's son who struts around not doing shit pronouncing genius quips like "Hitler was right... he had the right idea" and talking about how one day this will all be his.

The guy with the greasy hair pressed to his forehead has always creeped me out. I live in PS but often go the Met with my boyfriend who lives in PH. The second I walk into the store he is usually perched on the metal rail in the entrance of the store, and he unshamefully glares and eyes me up and down. I spend most of my time in the store hiding behind my boyfriend and avoiding him. He's vile.
the younger guy is a huge flirt, and im not always in the mood for that...
Funny thing, I work in Sunset park, and while walking to work on day I saw him coming out of his house near 40th st. Since he lives there our paths frequently cross on my way to work when he is heading out to PH. I always look away and pretend like I don't recognize him. -
yeah, what's up w. the pastey-haired guy there anyway? he's pretty impressed w. himself isn't he?
i shop there alone sometimes and he definately makes the experience uncomfortable. -
He is annoyingly harmless.... Look him in the eye and nod.....

hey, I don't know where you guys live, but there's a great Associated on Franklin and Carroll. The produce is great, it's big, and I've asked them to brring things in and they had no problem with it. Prices are way better than Key Food's.
And Emily, I never thought about the aisles being slanted to the left. That makes so much sense now! lol... -
Is now the time to recommend the PS Food Coop?

I have a thing against orange vests. But I doubt anything could be worse than the Key on Washington Ave. That place is a black hole. Friendly cashiers though. -

How about the Met on Fulton -- that place is the WORST. All things considered (including enduring the flirtatious creep mentioned above), the Met on Vanderbilt is pretty good.
It's about a 15 min walk, but the Key Food on 5th ave and Sterling in Park Slope is like glorious suburban grocery shopping if you care to lug your bags back (or have a bike). -

I've done that, when I know I need "higher quality" products and can't get to my usual weekend jaunt to Fairway, I've strapped on my hiking backpack and trekked over to the Key Food on 5th Ave and Sterling to do my grocery shopping. -

The Met on Fulton... I agree that it's completely horrible. I went there one time after work before Thanksgiving to pick up a pie crust. Their freezers with the pie crusts in it were broken. Everything in that section was lukewarm.
It was totally absurd. I told the woman checking me out and she just gave me this sort of blank stare... she didn't even care. I made her track down the manager so they could know...
I'm never going back there, no matter how close it is to the C train stop.
Also, that Met store doesn't automatically discount things like the Met on Vanderbilt, so you have to get a Met card, which is also stupid. I didn't give her my Met card until the end of the order, and she told me that it wouldn't count and I should have told her I wanted to use it... -
I like the Met on Vanderbilt. More than once the owner/s have gone out of their way to order me stuff such as a brand of soy milk and olive oil that they usually don't stock. They say good morning, ask how I'm doing and sell the Daily News for a quarter. My only gripes is the that if I only have two-three items the bag boy gets to them before I do and has that tip jar out and they don't carry the NY Sun. Maybe I'm getting cheap in my sort of older years.
