Brown Betty Cafe — Brooklynian

Brown Betty Cafe

I recommend trying Brown Betty Cafe on Grand just off Fulton. (It's just around the corner from "Bargain 'R Us.") We've gone there to satisfy our sweet tooth and tonight it was a welcome place to have a light meal on my way home from work. No cooking, no washing dishes and a chance to sit in air conditioning and enjoy a nicely presented salmon salad.

I think Kush is better for a fine dinner, but I was certainly pleased with my salad and it's a very pleasant place. I think they are more in competition with Outpost, but Brown Betty Cafe is much smaller and lighter and more airy. I hope this neighborhood can decently support these wonderful new places popping up. This one is certainly worth supporting.

  • Brown Betty Cafe offers a Prix Fixe 3 course dinner for around $18 on Friday and Saturday nights.

I went this past Friday and it was amazing. The Jerk Chicken Breast with the Sweet Potatoes with a bit of maple syrup...oh my. Came with Rice and Beans too. It jumped right onto my "favorite foods" list.

It's very casual, good service, amazing food with good portions.

    Highly recommended.
  • Subject: Love Brown Betty

Cynthia, the owner of Brown Betty (and often also the chef and waiter) is the kind of proprietor I wish all the restaurants in Ft. Greene/ Clinton Hill had. The food is excellent and interesting, and the decor is cool. The service is pretty uneven- this isn't a place to go if you're in a rush or want extremely professional service. Cynthia cares that people have a good meal and a nice evening at her place, though, and I think that- in combination with some very good food- goes a long way.
  • I just saw this yesterday for the first time--coincidentally as the B26 was making its detour turn. I'm really excited to try it out.
  • Here's a review I did a while back. Reading about Brown Betty's makes me want to go back. That Jerk Chicken was amazing and the maple glazed yams would really get me ready for Turkey Day....

  • We just got this comment concerning Brown Betty's and I thought I'd share it with everyone:
My husband and I on November 17th, 2006 had a private party of 12 at Brown Betty's Cafe and no one was disappointed. First, let me expressed how comforting it was to be able to entertain our friends and feel as if we were in our own living room, except we had great service thanks to Ms Renee for hosting, great food, and fantastic music. As for the cooking staff (Mr. D & Ms. Cynthia) thank you so much for an "AWESOME" dinner. Of course, it would not have been a success if not for Owner of Brown Betty’s Café and Chef Ms. Cynthia Walker. Thank you for making Nick's Birthday a memorable evening and allowing us to literally take over your Café.

I really really have to go back here. That jerk chicken is awesome.
  • Anyone know the operating hours of Brown Betty? Every time I walk by it's closed. I wouldn't even know it was there if I hadn't caught it open one weekend on my way to the train.
  • No but here's the number (via Yahoo): 718.398.8800
