Blockbusters has credit score requirements now?
I just went to open an account at the local Blockbuster. I went armed with a passport, NY drivers license, utility bill and Visa check card from Chase. They declined to let me join. They said that you can't join unless you have a credit card - Visa or Mastercard check cards are not acceptable. Passports and drivers licences are also not acceptable unless you also produce a credit card. I just paid off and cut up my credit cards and I'm able to do everything I need to with my bank Visa check card. Well, everything apart from open an account at Blockbuster...........

That's odd, you don;t even need a credit card to rent a car. Have you considered a local video store. The one on 7th and Carroll seems ok. -
Piss on 'em - head over to Big Choice.
If you're talking about the BB on Flatbush, I prefer Video Edge, a block down, anyway - more interesting selection. -

I find it hard to believe that Blockbuster's target customers would have the appropriate ID. They should be begging for custom: they should even let my Min Pins join up. -

with the advent of netflix, you'd think they'd be giving away memberships. whatever. they're assholes. -
Subject: BB
I second the above...if you are talking about the BB on Flatbush near 8th, that store is a disaster. The people there were nice enough, but good luck finding any title in the right place. Join Netflix, join the indie place down the block...just avoid BB. They do nothing to earn your money. -
Try Hollywood videos on 5th and 8th street.
-
I thought all video rental places required credit card info on file, as insurance for them in case you don't return your videos. The three places I joined in PS all required credit cards. But now I rent from Netflix.
-
Hollywood requires credit cards. Like I said, I've never known a place that didn't.
-
I don't think that the Edge does... but it's been a while, I could be wrong.

Every video place I've ever used has happily accepted a Visa or Mastercard check card; they don't insist on an actual credit card. What difference does it make to them? - a valid check card does the same thing as a valid credit card and vice versa. -
True enough.
BB sucks anyway. -
Subject: CCards at Blockbuster
BBuster has asked for credit cards when opening accounts at least since 1992. -

It does make a difference to them because a valid check card is NOT the same as a valid credit card. The check cards you get from your bank with the Visa or MasterCard logo on it are connected to your checking account (usually), so, if you don't have any money in your checking account or you take every penny out of that account-then the card is worthless to people. It's not like there is a line of credit (as there is with a regular credit card) to back it up. That is why places like that want a regular credit card and not your bank card.
Also-wanting a credit card to sign you up as a member is not the same thing as looking for a credit score. The title of this thread is mis leading and incorrect. -
Credit cards don't often come with an unlimited credit line - they can be maxed just as easily as all of the money can be drawn from a bank account.

EXACTLY. Surely a debit card is a safer bet since most people keep SOME money in their checking account - surely at the very least a couple hundred dollars.
Howdy, Stranger!
