Nana vs. Mango: Salad Rolls and Soup

If you’re like Larry David and counting every single shrimp...

http://www.tv.com/curb-your-enthusiasm/the-shrimp-incident/episode/79140/summary.html

...and if you also like Thai lemon grass shrimp soup, here’s a tip:

Nana’s “Hot & Sour Broth lemongrass/ onion/ mushroom/ shrimp” costs
$4 and only comes with one piece of shrimp and zero vegetables, even though the menu clearly reads “mushroom.”

For the same size and price, you can get the same lemongrass broth at Mango packed with mushrooms, tomatoes, and other vegetables with at least three whole shrimp.

(I’m not sure how Lemongrass Grill’s lemongrass broth currently compares because I stopped buying it after I ate a large bowl of it and then vomited.)

If we’re talking fresh summer rolls, Nana’s got the lead. Nana’s “Rice Paper Salad Roll mango/mint leaf”
is tastier and served with a better sauce than Mango’s “Thai Me Up Roll Me Out.” (Lemongrass Grill's "fresh roll" was slightly greasy.)

Random question: has anyone tried Nana's lobster? If so, how is it?

  • One of the best dishes in the neighborhood can be found at Nana - the roti with curry sauce appetizer. Unfortunately, I think that's the only reason to go there - I found every other (vegetarian) entree to be very dull. I love Mango, though.

    Agreed!

True -- Nana's roti is excellent!

Pukk, a Thai vegetarian restaurant in Manhattan on 1st Ave near 5th St, also serves good roti.

  • Mango's chicken sate is awful! Four tasteless strips of chicken rolled in some generic spice...bland sauce.
and worst, the "cucumber salad" that's supposed to come with it consists of three little-finger-nail size dices that are so tiny they can't even be speared with a toothpick. So little for $6.
  • (sorry, this isn't a veg comment)
