Washington Avenue noise and traffic??!!
I'm looking at a condo on Washington Avenue between DeKalb and Myrtle, facing the street, and am concerned about noise and traffic. I've been told that rush hour in the morning brings lots of commercial trucks (air brakes, horns, etc). Does anybody have thoughts on how loud and busy Washington is? Thanks!!!

I walk along Washington every day to work. It is what it is: louder than the parallel one-way streets (e.g. St James), quieter than the bigger streets (Myrtle or DeKalb).
I guess it depends on what your tolerance is.
Sorry for not having any concrete advice to give you. -

You're living in the city. How quiet do you expect it to be?
We walk up Washington to the subway every morning and I really don't think it's that bad. As boygabriel said I guess it all depends on your tolerance level. It's amazing what you can get use to. -
Thanks for your replies. Yes, I know it's kind of a dumb question, and that everyone's tolerance is different--and right now I live on 8th Avenue in the city, so I know from noise, believe me (and I would love to have a little less of it). I'm just weighing this property versus others. Would folks agree that Washington gets a lot of trucks at rush hour? Does anybody reading this live/sleep in a place that faces Washington avenue, and do you find yourself getting awakened by traffic in the morning? Thank you all for considering--and for this fabulous resource.

I just moved out of a brownstone on Washington. My bedroom was in the back of the house, so I never heard a thing from the traffic on the street. I never noticed it being loud or obnoxious in the front of the house, either. There are definitely more trucks than on other side streets, but I really don't think it will disturb you greatly.

Subject: dekalb noise
I live on Dekalb. It sounds like the city, but it doesnt AT ALL compare to eight avenue. There's rarely any gridlock (honking, etc) although that might change with the new Atlantic Yards development (but that isn't for a few years). I never hear trucks rumbling (speeding) down Dekalb. I do hear the occasionaly eeee of bus breaks (I live right across from a bus stop) and that's something you just get used to. -
i live on washington between myrtle and willoughby, and i was concerned about the noise when we moved from a smaller street, but it hasn't bothered us--i have school-aged kids, so we're up at seven every morning, so maybe we're not the right demographic to ask, but it's been a pleasant surprise, for such a big street. i think it helps that a lot of the houses, mine included, are set back fairly far off the curb.

i live on washington but in PH - it's all white noise after a while and the worst is morning. i assume it's a similar situation down there. also, a lot depends on the windows. since it's a condo, you might be able to invest in the windows with two layers of glass - what are they called? (i can only think of the french term... !) anyway, better windows might mean less noise.
