St Johns Pl Block Party

Finally made it over there after dark, around 8:30. There were still hundreds of people hanging out, and a DJ was spinning line-dance hits - "Electric Boogie", and that dance-command song they always play at work parties and Cyclones games : "... Turn to the left! Cha-cha real smooth! dumm-CHICKA- dumm-CHICKA-dumm..." I counted 5 white people. There were no food vendors (maybe earlier in the day?) but many of the buildings had open barbecues going on.
The police presence was minimal. Stoop/courtyard drinking was apparently being tolerated, widely, as was marijuana smoking, though to be fair, I only passed through one cloud on my way back from the Washington Ave. side of the party. The DJs finally stopped at about 8:45, and the barricades were pulled back soon after that. -

That second song is probably "Cha Cha Slide." There weren't any vendors when I passed through for 5 mins either. This block is almost impossible to have a real block party in. Most don't even really know anyone besides the immediate neighbors/friends. It feels there could be at least 1,000 people on this block.

i am always the only white girl at office holiday parties that knows the cha cha slide. its a record that i've held for three or four years now. its just not a party without the cha cha slide.

It's one of the "family reunion" genre of songs, so it doesn't bother me. The directions are downrigtht nonsensical though.
