tenants with pets

when you walk in the common hallway always barking.

I wonder if you could have a clause in a lease that requires a certain amount of time with a dog trainer...
Dogs are great, but lots of people are just stupid about what they need. -
yeah, some people are not very bright. one woman in my building got a really needy, clingy dog (I guess most dogs are) and then was never home. the dog barked constantly. and cried. it was pathetic.

Our building is connected to another by a courtyard. The neighbor in the other building leaves his dog alone and the crazed beast proceeds to howl for hours on end. The people in this neighborhood are very non-confrontational and I can't believe they put up with this. One time that beast howled for a week straight..We did speak to the super over there and also sent letters to the bldg. mgrs and called 311. It amazing how selfish people are.
Also the people who suffer in silence. -
my dog is perfect.
he is so quiet, our old upstairs neighbor asked us if he was mute, because she had never heard him bark, howl, or whine once. -
I have a tenant with a large dog and asked a neighbor to call me if he hears or see's anything worth reporting. So far I've heard nothing.
On a slightly different note, I own in a 12 unit building where 90% of the other owners have dogs. I have two small dogs- one is perfectly trained and healthy and exceptionally good. The other was a rescue dog and has gone through therapy, gets regular anti-depressants, and needs walkers to pop in on him twice a day. If I didn't take the dog he would have been put to sleep, and he's actually very sweet and it's not his fault he was beaten as a puppy so I took him! Since then I have had nothing but complaints from people above me who have a screaming yelling child (I work with babies and this is no normal screaming), a young couple next door who pump music extremely loud and smoke pot in the alleyway between our units, and a young caribbean girl who's mother (?)enters the building at all hours screaming and yelling in the hallways and mutters "white bitch" when I say hello.
These kind of things are relative. While someones dog barking when a bell is rung may be unacceptable to one person, you may not even notice it. I say give this person a trail basis. Let them know you'll be watching them very carefully. -
Subject: Life's RUFF in a building with bad dog owners
I bought a 1 BR on Crown b/t Washington and Franklin and there are a few dog owners in the building. One girl has 3 or 4 dogs (I'm sure her place smells just great.) This past weekend (President's Day) some of the dogs from different apartments were barking all day (different dogs at different times), and when I griped to a neighbor in the hopes of striking up a little conversation on a mutual problem, his response fell a little short from what I expected..."Just ignore it."
I just may have to become "that guy" who's on with the management co. and 311. Is 311 anonymous? -
I believe that 311 can be anonymous, but again folks, if you sense that any animal is being abused (such as being left out all day and night without proper shelter, food, or water) you need to make a call. One phone call could save an innocent animals life.
BTW- complaining to building managers are pretty useless. As long as the checks come in, they couldn't care less. Chances are they don't even live there. -
I have 2 dogs and 4 cats and I think I'm a pretty good tenant. But I looked for 10 months for an apartment that would accept all of us (and wasn't way out of my price range). I'm quiet and clean, my pets don't damage anything in the apartment, I pay my rent on time, and try not to bug my landlord (except when it comes to major stuff). I'm considerate of everyone in my building and always willing to help out.
My dogs do bark a little, when we first moved there were a few complaints but that was just because they had to adjust to new noises. Now, the other tenants tell me they don't even hear them in their apartments.
I totally understand landlord's reluctance to rent to someone with so many pets because of all the terrible pet owners. But there are more people like me who are responsible than people think. I would think that a reference from a prospective tenant's current landlord might not do much good if they are irresponsible. Their landlord might just want to get rid of them but a reference from a previous landlord would probably be a better guide.
